Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 3.5
You identify the chart’s subject and make a brief attempt at an overview, noting that urbanisation generally rises and that Malaysia grows strongly. However, the response covers only part of the data: Indonesia is omitted entirely, and Thailand’s forecast is reported as reaching 20%, whereas the chart shows about 50% by 2040. The Philippines is described as reaching 60%, rather than approximately 56%. The overview is also too general to highlight the key contrasts, such as Malaysia becoming the most urbanised country and Indonesia’s marked rise. The response is 92 words, below the required 150, and ends unfinished with “Furthermore,”. To improve, include all four countries, select accurate key figures, and develop a clear overview with supporting comparisons.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5
There is a basic sequence: an introduction, an overview, and then country-specific details. This gives the reader some sense of the response’s purpose, and phrases such as “Overall” and “Furthermore” attempt to connect ideas. However, the progression is incomplete: the final “Furthermore,” has no following point, and the response stops before covering all the countries. The country details are compressed into one long paragraph, making comparisons difficult to follow. Grouping the information into an overview and two body paragraphs—for example, Malaysia and the Philippines, then Thailand and Indonesia—would create clearer progression. Use linking expressions to show contrasts and changes over time, rather than relying on a few isolated transitions.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The response uses some relevant chart vocabulary, including “percentage,” “population,” “increased,” and “fluctuate,” so the topic is generally understandable. However, the range is limited and several spelling and word-choice errors reduce precision: “line char,” “og,” “steadly,” and “Phlippines” are noticeable, while “Citizen of Thailand” is not a natural way to describe the data. Some phrases are also awkward, such as “will be rose upto.” Aim for accurate, conventional language for describing graphs, including “urban population,” “rose steadily,” “fluctuated,” and “is projected to reach.” Proofreading spelling and choosing precise collocations would make the information easier to understand.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You attempt both simple statements and future descriptions, but the range of sentence structures is narrow, and errors occur frequently. For example, “will rose” uses the wrong verb form after “will”; “it will be rose” incorrectly combines a passive form with the verb; and “percentage … increase” lacks agreement in “increased” or “increases,” depending on the intended time reference. The sentence about Thailand also shifts between past and future without a clear, accurate structure. Punctuation is inconsistent, with missing spaces after full stops, as in “2040.Phlippines.” Practise forming past-tense descriptions and forecasts separately: “rose from … to …” and “is projected to rise to …”. Vary sentence patterns only after these basic forms are secure.
