Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
The response fails to meet the minimum word count requirement of 150 words, which negatively impacts the score. While you have attempted to summarize the main trends, the data interpretation is often inaccurate or confusing. For example, stating that the population in Thailand 'significantly decreased' by 1% is a misinterpretation of the graph's upward trend. Furthermore, the predictions for 2030 and 2040 are vague and lack the necessary precision required for an Academic Task 1 response. To improve, ensure you accurately report the data points and provide a clear overview that highlights the most significant trends rather than listing individual fluctuations.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The essay is organized into paragraphs, but the logical flow between sentences is weak. The use of cohesive devices is limited and sometimes mechanical, such as the repetitive use of 'In year...' to start sentences. The transition between the historical data and the future predictions is abrupt. To improve, use a wider range of linking words and phrases (e.g., 'In contrast,' 'Furthermore,' 'Looking ahead to the future') to guide the reader through your analysis. Ensure that each paragraph has a clear focus and that ideas within paragraphs are connected logically rather than appearing as a list of isolated observations.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The vocabulary is somewhat limited and repetitive. You rely on basic terms like 'masses' and 'growth rate,' which are not always used in the correct context. There are also issues with word choice, such as 'pictorial representation' (which is overly formal and slightly unnatural here) and 'surge every decade' (which does not accurately describe the data). To achieve a higher band, try to incorporate more precise vocabulary related to trends, such as 'fluctuated,' 'remained stable,' 'projected to reach,' or 'experienced a steady increase.' Avoid using informal or imprecise terms when describing statistical data.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
There are frequent grammatical errors throughout the text that occasionally impede clarity. Examples include subject-verb agreement issues ('Malaysian population surge' instead of 'surges') and incorrect preposition usage ('in year 1990' instead of 'in 1990'). The sentence structures are mostly simple, and there is a lack of complex sentence forms. To improve, focus on mastering basic sentence construction and subject-verb agreement. Additionally, try to incorporate a variety of complex structures, such as using relative clauses or subordinating conjunctions, to demonstrate a wider range of grammatical control.
