IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The graph below gives information about the percentage of the population in four Asian countries living in cities from 1970 to 2020, with predictions for 2030 and 2040. Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons where relevant.

 

Student answer (Band 6.5)

The line graph illustrates the population variation from 1970 to 2020 and population prediction for 2030 and 2040 in four Asian countries.

The four coutries experience an upward trend of percentage of the population in the past and future. The percentage of the population living in Malaysia saw th most significant growth. In contrast, Philippines experienced the least rising trend.

In 1970, Malaysia had approximately 30% of total population, which was closed to 31% of Philippines, and it was higher than the other two countries. Then it remains growing and it was predicted ending at 80% in the 2040, making it the largest percentage of population living in cities among four countries. Meanwhile, the total trend of Philippines is also upward, the percentage even exceeded Malaysia's in 1990 at approxiamtely 50%. While before it ended at approximately 53% in the 2040, it has dropped to 42% in the 2010.

In terms of Thailand and Indonesia, the percentage of the population living in cities were approcimately 14% and 19% in the 1970, then they both saw growth from 1970 to 2000. In 2000, the percentage of Philippines exceeded Malaysia, and it surged dramatically which is predicted ending at 60% in the 2040. As for the Mayliasia, it goes up moderately, with approximately 44% in 2040.
