Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
The response fails to address the task prompt entirely. The instructions explicitly ask for a summary of a graph showing population trends in four Asian countries from 1970 to 2040. However, the student has written a report about two pie charts regarding reasons for leaving or staying in the U.K. This is a complete mismatch of the task requirements. While the student does report data from the charts they chose to describe, the failure to address the actual prompt provided results in a very low score for Task Achievement, as the core task has not been attempted.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The essay is organised into logical paragraphs, with an introduction, an overview, and two body paragraphs. There is a clear attempt to use cohesive devices such as 'On the other side', 'Looking at the more detail', and 'In contrast'. However, the logical progression is undermined by the fact that the content is irrelevant to the prompt. The referencing is generally clear, and the paragraphing is appropriate for a report structure, which prevents a lower score despite the complete lack of relevance to the provided graph.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The vocabulary is adequate for the task, with attempts to use descriptive language such as 'accounting for', 'records the largest figure', and 'respectively'. There are some awkward phrasings, such as 'Looking at the more detail' (should be 'Looking at the details') and 'Nevertheless than friends and family' (which is grammatically incorrect and confusing). While the range is sufficient to convey the information about the pie charts, the errors in collocation and word choice prevent a higher band score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The student uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'The two pie charts illustrates' (subject-verb agreement error) and 'it’s making the highest figure' (incorrect tense/structure). Additionally, 'Nevertheless than friends and family' is a non-standard construction. While the meaning is generally clear, the frequency of these errors is noticeable. The student demonstrates an ability to use complex sentences, but the control over these structures is inconsistent, leading to a score in the mid-range.
