The graph below gives information about the percentage of the population in four Asian countries living in cities from 1970 to 2020, with predictions for 2030 and 2040. Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 7.0)
The line graph illustrates the percentage of the total number of people residing in four distinct countries between 1970 and 2020 and including future estimations in the years 2030 and 2040.
Overall, it is evident that the population growth for all four cities has considerably increased throughout the period and will continue to rise in the future years. Despite beginning with the lowest proportion in the chart, the figures of Indonesia surpassed the ones of Thailand and Philippines. However, Malaysia recorded the highest contribution among all four cities, whereas the figures of Thailand remained the lowest.
Beginning with the most prominent category, the population rose steadily from 30% of the total population in 1970 to about 74% in 2020 at Malaysia. According to the future predictions, the population of Malaysia will peak at nearly 82%. Meanwhile, the figures of Philippines fluctuated throughout the period, starting off with just 31% and climbing to approximately 52% by 2040.
Turning to the remaining categories, Indonesia accounted for a significant growth in overall population from nearly 12% of the total population in the year 1970 to 51% in the year 2020 and would gradually increase to 60% by 2040. Additionally, the population growth climbed steadily from 19% in 1970 and reached at just 30% in 2020 and is about to stood at around 45% in 2040.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The response covers all requirements of the task. You have successfully identified the main trends and made relevant comparisons between the four countries. The overview is clear and highlights the general upward trend. However, there is a slight inaccuracy in your terminology; you refer to the countries as 'cities' throughout the text, which is a misinterpretation of the data provided. Additionally, while the main features are reported, the description of the final category (Thailand) is slightly vague as you do not explicitly name the country in the final sentence. Despite these minor issues, the key information is well-selected and presented.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, overview, and body paragraphs. You use cohesive devices such as 'Meanwhile,' 'Turning to,' and 'Additionally' to guide the reader through the data. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the different categories. The progression of ideas is generally smooth, although the transition between the overview and the body paragraphs could be slightly more refined. The referencing is mostly clear, though the confusion between 'countries' and 'cities' slightly impacts the overall precision of the logical flow.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'estimations,' 'proportion,' 'fluctuated,' and 'prominent.' There is an attempt to use less common vocabulary, which is generally successful. However, the repeated misuse of the word 'cities' instead of 'countries' is a noticeable lexical error that affects the accuracy of the report. Some collocations are slightly unnatural, such as 'reached at just 30%,' where the preposition 'at' is unnecessary. Overall, the vocabulary is sufficient to convey the intended meaning clearly.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are some grammatical errors, such as 'is about to stood at,' which should be 'is expected to stand at.' Another error is 'the figures of Indonesia surpassed the ones of Thailand,' where 'those of' would be more appropriate than 'the ones of.' Punctuation is generally correct, and the errors present do not impede communication. To reach a higher band, focus on ensuring consistent verb tense usage when discussing future predictions and refining the accuracy of your complex sentence constructions.
