The graph below gives information about the percentage of the population in four Asian countries living in cities from 1970 to 2020, with predictions for 2030 and 2040. Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 7.0)
The line graph displays details about the proportion of the population in four different Asian countries from the year 1970 to 2020, while giving predictions for the years 2030 and 2040.
Overall, it can be seen that as the year increased, the proportion of the population also increased in all four nations, Malaysia remained higher throughout the period from 2000 onwards. It has also predicted that there will be an increment in percentage across all four countries.
Looking at the Philippines, in 1970, it started as the dominating nation, which remained stable for a decade, while almost 20% increased in 1990. It dropped to 40% in 2010 and slightly recovered in 2020 by 3%. It is also expected to rise in 2030 and 2040, concluding at approximately 49% and 52%, respectively. On the other hand, Malaysia had significant growth, concluding at 60% in 2000 and reaching a top of 70% in 2020. It suggested that it will keep breaking records by touching the marks of 80% and 82% in 2030 and 2040, respectively.
In addition, Thailand had constant growth till 1990, concluding just below 30%, then remained stable till 2020. It is expected to rise by almost 40% in 2030 and 45% in 2040, each. Nevertheless, the proportion of Indonesians also increased throughout the period. In 1970, it was at almost 15%, which equalised with thailand in 2000, then experienced a sharp rise, concluding at 50% in 2020, which is also expected to rise to 60% and 62% in 2030 and 2040.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The response covers all parts of the task, including the trends for all four countries and the future predictions. You have successfully identified the main features, such as Malaysia's dominance and the general upward trend. However, the description of the Philippines is slightly confusing; stating it 'dropped to 40% in 2010' when the graph shows a different trajectory suggests a slight misinterpretation of the data points. To reach a higher band, ensure that the data points cited are consistently accurate and that comparisons between countries are more explicitly drawn throughout the body paragraphs rather than just in the overview.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, overview, and body paragraphs. You use cohesive devices such as 'On the other hand,' 'In addition,' and 'Nevertheless' to transition between ideas. However, some of the referencing is slightly mechanical, and the flow within the paragraph about the Philippines is a bit disjointed due to the way the data is presented. Paragraphing is used appropriately to group the information by country, which helps the reader follow the progression of the data. Improving the variety of linking phrases would further enhance the flow.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'proportion,' 'dominating,' 'significant growth,' and 'experienced a sharp rise.' There are some minor inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'It has also predicted' (should be 'It is also predicted') and 'each' used redundantly at the end of a sentence. While you attempt to use less common vocabulary, the precision is occasionally lacking. To improve, focus on more sophisticated collocations and ensure that your verb forms are consistently accurate when describing trends.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'as the year increased' (should be 'as time passed') and 'It suggested that it will keep breaking' (should be 'It is suggested that it will continue to break'). Punctuation is generally functional, but there are some run-on sentences and comma splices, particularly in the third paragraph. While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and consistent tense usage for future predictions will help improve your accuracy.
