Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
The response fails to meet the minimum word count requirement of 150 words, which significantly impacts the task achievement score. Furthermore, the response is incomplete, cutting off mid-sentence in the final paragraph. While you identified the main trends, the data reporting is inconsistent and lacks precision. For example, you mention '30% population living' without specifying which country, and the data points provided for the Philippines are contradictory and confusing. To improve, ensure you complete the task by covering all countries mentioned in the graph and provide accurate, clearly referenced data points for each trend described.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The essay has a basic structure with an introduction, overview, and body paragraphs. However, the progression of ideas is hindered by the incomplete nature of the text. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'In contrast' and 'Overall', but they are sometimes used incorrectly or repetitively. Paragraphing is present, but the final paragraph is truncated, which disrupts the logical flow of the report. To improve, focus on using a wider variety of linking words and ensure that each paragraph is fully developed and logically connected to the previous one.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The range of vocabulary is limited and repetitive. You rely on basic terms like 'increased' and 'decreased' throughout the text. There are also noticeable errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'attracted about 30% population' and 'dramtically, increased at around 50%'. Spelling errors, such as 'dramtically', also detract from the quality of the writing. To reach a higher band, you should incorporate more precise vocabulary related to trends, such as 'surged', 'fluctuated', or 'remained stable', and ensure accurate spelling and word formation.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The response contains a mix of simple and some attempted complex structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors. Issues include missing articles ('in 1970, approximately, 30% population living'), incorrect verb tenses ('By 2000, it has decreased'), and punctuation errors. These errors occasionally make the meaning difficult to follow. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of articles. Additionally, ensure that your sentences are complete and grammatically sound before moving on to the next point.
