Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0
The response attempts to summarize the graph but fails to provide a clear overview of the main trends. The description of the data is often inaccurate; for instance, the claim that the Philippines' population 'declined' from 1990 to 2040 contradicts the typical upward trend seen in such demographic data. Furthermore, the response includes unnecessary meta-commentary about the task instructions ('compress and make comparisons the information') rather than focusing solely on the data. Key features are not highlighted effectively, and the analysis is superficial, lacking the necessary precision to reach a higher band.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The essay is organized into paragraphs, but the logical progression is weak. The use of cohesive devices is often mechanical or incorrect, such as the awkward transition 'Taking a closer look of graph which is illustrates us'. The referencing is frequently unclear, making it difficult for the reader to follow the comparison between countries. The conclusion is abrupt and does not effectively synthesize the information presented in the body paragraphs. Overall, the flow of ideas is disjointed, which hinders the clarity of the report.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The vocabulary is limited and repetitive, relying heavily on basic terms like 'population' and 'graph'. There are frequent errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'graph starts normally' and 'population of Thailand gradually declined than all other countries'. The student struggles to use precise terminology to describe trends (e.g., 'rise up' instead of 'increase' or 'climb'). The range is insufficient to convey the information with the necessary precision required for an Academic Task 1 response.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The response contains frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede meaning. There are issues with subject-verb agreement ('Indonesia's population are very low'), incorrect verb tenses, and awkward sentence structures ('Phillipines's population goes down then Malaysia'). The use of complex sentences is attempted but often results in errors, such as the run-on sentence in the introduction. Punctuation is also inconsistent, particularly with the use of commas and capitalization. The range of structures is limited, and the high frequency of errors prevents the response from reaching a higher band.
