IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The graph below gives information about the percentage of the population in four Asian countries living in cities from 1970 to 2020, with predictions for 2030 and 2040. Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 5.0)
In the given graph, the first curve represents the Indonesia country. In 1970, the population of Indonesia was more than 10 percent. The other three lines shows the Thailand, Malaysia and Philippines. At the time when the population of Indonesia was above the 10 percent the other percentages varies as there is near to 20 percent people for Thailand. Thirsty percentage is for the Malaysia country and more than thirty is for the people of last left place which is Philippines. With the passage of time the number of people of all the four countries are looking to be increased except for the Philippines where after 1990 the population looks decreasing. But next to 2010 there is also a gradual increase in the persons of the Philippines. By the 2040, the Malaysian percentage increased to the above 80. In the same time, the Indonesian percentage moves up to 60. While the Thailand percentage at the same time appears to be 50. And for the one remaining country, the curve seems to be end at the 50 plus percentage. This was all about the percentage of population of all the given four countries according to their curves shown in the graph.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0
The response attempts to describe the graph but fails to provide a clear overview or highlight the main trends effectively. The description is fragmented, focusing on individual data points rather than identifying significant patterns or comparing the countries as requested. For example, the mention of 'Thirsty percentage' (likely a typo for thirty) and the vague description of the Philippines' trend lack the analytical depth required for an Academic Task 1. The response does not adequately summarize the information, as it reads more like a list of observations rather than a cohesive report. To improve, you must identify the overall trends, such as the general upward trajectory and the specific ranking of the countries by 2040.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The response lacks paragraphing, which makes it difficult to follow the progression of information. While there is a basic attempt to sequence the data, the lack of clear cohesive devices makes the transition between countries and time periods feel mechanical and repetitive. The use of referencing is often unclear, such as 'the last left place', which is not appropriate for an academic report. To improve, you should organize your writing into clear paragraphs: an introduction, an overview of the main trends, and two body paragraphs detailing specific data points. Using linking words like 'In contrast', 'Furthermore', and 'Subsequently' would significantly improve the flow.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The vocabulary is limited and contains several inaccuracies that hinder the professional tone of the report. Phrases like 'the Indonesia country', 'the persons of the Philippines', and 'the curve seems to be end' are unnatural and imprecise. There is also a lack of variety in reporting verbs and descriptive language; the response relies heavily on basic structures. To reach a higher band, you should incorporate more precise terminology related to data description, such as 'proportion', 'fluctuated', 'upward trend', and 'projected to reach'. Avoid informal phrasing and ensure that country names are used correctly without unnecessary articles.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The response contains frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede clarity. There are issues with subject-verb agreement, such as 'The other three lines shows' and 'the number of people... are looking'. Additionally, the use of articles is inconsistent, and sentence structures are largely simple or repetitive. There is a lack of complex sentence structures, which limits the range. To improve, focus on mastering basic sentence construction, ensuring that subjects and verbs agree, and practicing the correct use of articles. Incorporating more complex structures, such as relative clauses or participle phrases, will help demonstrate a wider grammatical range.
