Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0

The response attempts to summarize the graph but fails to provide a clear overview of the main trends. While it mentions the four countries, the data reporting is inaccurate and confusing. For instance, the claim that the Philippines reached 90% urbanization is not supported by standard interpretations of such graphs. Furthermore, the response lacks a clear comparison between the countries, focusing instead on disjointed descriptions. Key features, such as the starting points in 1970 and the projected end points in 2040, are not clearly contrasted. The conclusion is also very brief and does not synthesize the information effectively, leading to an underdeveloped response.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0

The essay lacks logical organization. The paragraphs are poorly structured, and the flow of ideas is frequently interrupted by grammatical errors and run-on sentences. There is a lack of cohesive devices to link ideas; for example, the transition between the description of the Philippines and Malaysia is abrupt. The use of referencing is often unclear, making it difficult for the reader to follow the progression of the data. The conclusion is disconnected from the body paragraphs, and the overall structure does not facilitate a clear summary of the information provided in the graph.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The vocabulary is limited and repetitive, relying heavily on basic phrases like 'the population is' and 'highly increased'. There is a lack of precision in describing trends; for example, 'the average of people was lived in cities' is an awkward and inaccurate construction. The student struggles to use appropriate terminology for describing data, such as 'fluctuated', 'peaked', or 'remained stable'. While the meaning is generally discernible, the lack of variety and the frequent misuse of words prevent the response from achieving a higher band score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The response contains frequent grammatical errors that impede readability. There are significant issues with sentence structure, such as run-on sentences and missing verbs (e.g., 'the people that how lived in the cities 1970'). Subject-verb agreement is inconsistent, and there is a lack of complex sentence structures. Punctuation is also problematic, with a lack of full stops to separate distinct ideas. These errors are pervasive and occur throughout the text, indicating a lack of control over basic grammatical forms.
