Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0

The student attempts to report data from the line graph, including figures for Indonesia, Thailand, Malaysia, and the Philippines across various years. However, the response falls short of fully presenting a clear overview or accurately summarizing the main trends. There are several inaccuracies in the data reported, such as stating 'the number of population was maximum in Malaysia and minimum in Thailand' without proper contextualization of urbanization percentages, and providing inaccurate data points (e.g., claiming Indonesia was 60% in 2040 when the data indicates around 64%). The overview is weak, consisting of vague statements rather than capturing the overall upward trend in urban population across all four countries. Consequently, the task is addressed only partially, aligning with a Band 5.0 level.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0

The essay is divided into paragraphs, but the organization and progression of ideas are frequently hindered by awkward phrasing and abrupt transitions. Phrases like 'At a fluting glance' and repetitive sentence structures disrupt the logical flow. Cohesive devices are used awkwardly or inaccurately, and referencing is sometimes unclear, making it difficult for the reader to follow the comparisons between countries. Paragraphing is attempted, but internal coherence within the paragraphs is weak, as sentences jump between different years and nations without a clear logical sequence. This performance fits the Band 5.0 descriptors for Coherence and Cohesion.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is limited and often unnatural or misused. Examples include 'people rates', 'foretelling', 'fluting glance', and 'resident living'. Word choices and collocations frequently fail, showing a lack of control over less common lexical items. While the writer manages to communicate basic topics related to population and percentages, spelling and word-choice errors are noticeable and occasionally cause confusion. The range of vocabulary is minimally adequate for the task, but lacks the precision and flexibility required for higher bands, placing it firmly at Band 5.0.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 4.5

The response features a very limited range of grammatical structures, and attempts at complex or descriptive sentences frequently result in serious errors. Examples of ungrammatical constructions include 'citizens in Indonesia spent almost double in case of Thailand', 'people of living in cities', and '80% people was increasing'. Subject-verb agreement errors, incorrect preposition use, and awkward participle phrases are frequent throughout the text. These errors often cause difficulty for the reader and distort meaning, reflecting the characteristics of a Band 4.0 or 4.5 performance, rounded to 4.5.
