Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The response attempts to cover all parts of the task by reporting the data for Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia, and the Philippines from 1970 to 2040. An overview is provided, noting Malaysia as the highest and Thailand as the lowest. However, there are notable inaccuracies in reporting the data. For instance, the student states that Thailand's proportion reached '305' (presumably a typo for 30.5 or similar) in 2020, and mentions that in 2024 the rate will be above 40%, which misinterprets the 2030/2040 intervals on the graph. Furthermore, some predictions and figures are imprecise or misread, such as Indonesia's starting point and final projections. The selection of main features is present, but the accuracy and development of these points are compromised by data errors and awkward sentence structure, placing this performance at Band 5.5.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0

The response is divided into paragraphs, starting with an introduction, an overview, and body paragraphs for individual countries. However, the logical progression is hindered by frequent structural and grammatical breaks. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'Overall', 'it can be vividly seen', and 'Moving towards the rest of the rest of the information', but they are sometimes mechanical or awkwardly phrased (e.g., 'the rest of the rest of the information'). Paragraphing is attempted, but the grouping of information feels disjointed, particularly in the body paragraphs where multiple countries and years are compressed without clear thematic links. Referencing is occasionally unclear, leading to a choppy reading experience. Overall, coherence aligns with a Band 5.0.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task but exhibits noticeable limitations and errors. The student attempts less common vocabulary items such as 'proportion', 'prediction', 'fluctuation', and 'incline', but encounters issues with word choice and collocation (e.g., 'rapidly incline' instead of 'rapid incline', 'stood at' used incorrectly for future projections). There are also mechanical errors like 'laso' for 'also' and 'vivdly' for 'vividly'. While the language communicates the general idea, the frequency of lexical inaccuracies and awkward phrasing restricts the score to Band 5.0.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The response displays a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, though control over grammar and punctuation is weak. There are frequent errors in verb tenses, particularly when mixing past data with future predictions (e.g., 'will stood at', 'will be increased to 40% in 2020, in 2024, this rate willbe above 40%'). Punctuation is also problematic, with lower-case beginnings of sentences ('it can be vivdly seen', 'in the 1990') and run-on structures. These persistent errors frequently cause strain for the reader and prevent the grammar from reaching a higher band, making Band 5.0 appropriate.
