Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0
The student attempts to address the task by describing the main features of the line graph regarding urban population percentages in four countries. However, the overview is weak and inaccurate, claiming that the graph shows a 'fluctuating tendency' when Malaysia and Indonesia display steady, significant upward trends. Furthermore, the selection of data is erratic, and several figures are misread or vague, such as stating in 2010 that 'Malaysia showed a great increase with figures about 70 while phillippines and indonesia had equal percentage of population with 40%'. The conclusions drawn about predictions are also sparse and overly simplistic. These limitations place the response at Band 5.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The response is organized into paragraphs, attempting an introduction, an overview, and body paragraphs. However, logical progression is weak. Transitions between ideas feel abrupt, and cohesive devices are frequently mechanical, inaccurate, or missing. For instance, phrases like 'Another were consistenly incresing nothing intresting happen in them that year' lack proper linking and referencing, making the progression difficult to follow. Paragraphing is attempted, but internal cohesion within paragraphs fails to guide the reader smoothly through the data comparisons. This corresponds to a Band 5 for Coherence and Cohesion.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is basic and repetitive, frequently relying on simple terms like 'increase', 'rise', and 'percentage'. There are numerous spelling mistakes ('polpulation', 'Phillippines', 'thailand', 'consistenly', 'incresing', 'intresting', 'least') and word-choice errors, such as referring to countries as 'cities' ('all four cities', 'populated city'). The range of vocabulary is limited and minimally adequate for conveying basic numerical data, though errors occasionally cause confusion for the reader. This performance aligns with Band 5.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The student uses a mix of simple sentence forms and attempts at complex structures, but these attempts are frequently flawed by grammatical errors. Examples include subject-verb agreement issues ('The percentage of population in cities is always remain high') and poor punctuation and clause construction ('In 1970 polpulation living in cities seems to be same with figures about 32% in Phillippines and Malaysia while on the other hand it was about 18% and 14% in thailand and Indonesia respectively.'). Errors are frequent and often cause difficulty for the reader, fitting the Band 5 descriptors.
