Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
The student attempts to address the prompt by summarising the line graph depicting urbanisation percentages in four Asian countries. However, the response falls short of fully reporting the main features and making relevant comparisons. For instance, the opening paragraph contains grammatical errors ('illustrate' instead of 'illustrates'), and the overview is repetitive and lacks a clear synthesis of the overall trends. Furthermore, specific data points cited in the body paragraph contain inaccuracies (e.g., Malaysia's starting and ending figures, and Philippines' trends are misinterpreted or vaguely described). While the general upward trend is acknowledged, key comparative details across the timeframe are missing or inaccurate, placing this response at Band 5.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
The text is organised into four paragraphs, which provides a basic structure for an introduction, body, and conclusion. However, the progression of ideas is hindered by repetitive phrasing and weak cohesive devices. Transitions between sentences are often abrupt or mechanically forced (e.g., 'While Philippines had highest trend', 'Whereas thailand and indonesia showed the little bite similar trend'). Paragraphing is attempted, but the grouping of information lacks logical flow, with countries mixed together without clear comparative categorisation. Reference words are sometimes ambiguous or misused, resulting in a score of 5.0 for Coherence and Cohesion.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is relatively basic and repetitive, relying heavily on terms like 'percentage', 'population', and 'trend'. There are noticeable spelling and word choice errors throughout the text, such as 'pupolation', 'indonesia' (uncapitalized), 'little bite' (instead of 'little bit'), and 'throught' (instead of 'through'). Less common lexical items are attempted but used inaccurately (e.g., 'highest trend' instead of 'highest percentage' or 'steepest increase'). The lexical range is minimally adequate for the task, but frequent errors cause some difficulty for the reader, fitting the Band 5 descriptor.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The student displays a limited range of grammatical structures, relying mostly on simple sentences with frequent errors when attempting more complex formations. Subject-verb agreement errors are present, such as 'All the graph lines shows' and 'these four countries shows'. Tense control is inconsistent, mixing past and present inappropriately ('that are living', 'this graph show'). Punctuation and capitalization errors also occur frequently, such as missing capital letters for proper nouns like 'thailand' and 'indonesia', and lower-case sentence starts like 'overall'. These frequent errors impede smooth reading and warrant a Band 5.
