Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the prompt by selecting and reporting the main features of the line graph regarding urban population percentages in four Asian countries. An overview is provided, noting that Malaysia experienced the highest urbanisation while Thailand had the lowest. Key comparisons are made between the countries across the timeline from 1970 to projected figures in 2040. However, some parts of the response are less fully developed and contain minor inaccuracies, such as grouping the Philippines and Thailand incorrectly as having the lowest trend until the end of 2040, whereas Thailand starts much lower than the Philippines. Figures are sometimes described vaguely, reflecting an adequate response to the task requirements where some trends are clear while others lack precise development.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The essay presents a coherent overall arrangement with a clear attempt to structure the information into introduction, overview, and body paragraphs. Paragraphing is used to separate different time periods and trends. However, cohesion is sometimes faulty or mechanical. Transition phrases like "to add up more", "Beside, it", and "On Other hand" are awkward and demonstrate mechanical or inappropriate linking. Referencing is also occasionally unclear, such as pronoun confusion in sentences like "The Malaysia is in his peak". While the logical progression of ideas is generally understandable, these lapses in cohesive devices and referencing prevent the response from achieving a higher level.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is minimally adequate for the task, providing a sufficient range to describe basic trends and percentages. The writer attempts some less common vocabulary, such as "dramatical growth" and "marginally flautuations", but these attempts are marred by noticeable word-form and spelling errors ("flautuations", "singificant rosed rate", "ocure"). Word choice is frequently imprecise or unidiomatic, for instance, describing Malaysia as being "accounted as highest dominated". These errors and the limited lexical range mean the reader has to work slightly harder to interpret the intended meanings, placing the lexical performance at this specific level.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The student attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating an awareness of how to structure clauses. However, there are frequent errors in grammar and punctuation throughout the text. Issues include missing or incorrect prepositions, awkward verb forms, article misuse (e.g., "the Malaysia", "in his peak"), and subject-verb agreement errors. While these errors do not completely impede overall communication, they occur with enough frequency and disrupt sentence flow sufficiently to characterise the grammatical control at this level.
