Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5

The response is under the minimum word count of 150 words, coming in at 137 words (excluding 12 words copied from the prompt). The response attempts to address the task by giving an overview and mentioning some data points from the chart, but it only partially covers the information. The summary of trends is limited, and some of the data reported does not accurately reflect the visual data, such as the statement about 1990 figures or the prediction for 2040. To improve, the student must meet the word count requirement, provide a clearer overview of the main trends across the entire time period, and select accurate data to support comparisons.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5

The response attempts some organisation with a loose overall structure, but lacks a clear logical progression throughout. Paragraphing is rudimentary and sentences often stand alone rather than flowing logically into one another. Cohesive devices are basic, repetitive, and occasionally inaccurate, such as 'While in contrast'. Reference words are sometimes unclear, making it difficult to follow the relationships between ideas. To move to a higher band, the writer needs to group related information more logically, use a wider and more accurate range of cohesive devices, and structure the text into clear, cohesive paragraphs.

Lexical Resource: Band 4.5

The vocabulary used is basic and repetitive, with several spelling errors ('gragh') and inappropriate word choices (such as 'rich in population'). The range is minimally adequate for the task, but frequent inaccuracies in word choice and word form mean the vocabulary strains the reader at times. The writer attempts some less common vocabulary related to data trends ('maximum rise'), but these are not used with sufficient precision or control. To enhance the lexical resource, the writer should incorporate a wider variety of precise vocabulary for describing trends and avoid direct repetition of basic terms.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5

The response shows a very limited range of sentence structures, relying mostly on simple sentences with frequent errors in complex structures. There are persistent errors in verb tenses, subject-verb agreement, articles, and prepositions, such as 'about 30 percent in Malaysia... lives in different cities' and 'population in Philippines cross over'. Punctuation is also weak in places. These frequent errors distract the reader and occasionally obscure the meaning. To achieve a higher band, the writer must demonstrate greater control over basic grammar rules, improve sentence variety, and reduce the frequency of errors in verb forms and agreement.
