Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

The response covers the main features of the graph, presenting an overview and identifying key trends, such as the significant growth in Malaysia and the lower figures for Thailand. However, the information is only partially accurate and suffers from confusing phrasing and data misinterpretations. For instance, the student refers to the countries as 'cities' in the overview, and confuses specific data points, such as stating that Thailand and Indonesia are expected to reach certain levels in the year 2020 when 2020 is a past year on the timeline and 2030/2040 are the projection years. Furthermore, some comparisons are underdeveloped or unclear, preventing a fully developed response.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response is organised into paragraphs, beginning with an introduction and an overall statement, followed by body paragraphs. However, there is a lack of clear overall progression and logical flow between ideas. Cohesive devices are used somewhat mechanically or inaccurately, such as 'To strat with' and 'Moving on', and referencing is occasionally unclear, which disrupts the progression of information. Paragraphing is attempted, but the internal organisation of sentences within paragraphs lacks smooth logical sequencing.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is limited and barely adequate for the task. There are noticeable lexical errors, such as 'Asisn' instead of Asian, 'percdentage', 'strat' instead of start, and 'enrolment' used incorrectly to describe population proportions. Word choice and collocation are frequently imprecise, for example stating that Thailand has the smallest 'enrolment' throughout the period. These errors occasionally cause some difficulty for the reader and reveal a restricted control of appropriate terminology for describing graphical data.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The text shows a very limited range of sentence structures, relying mostly on simple sentences or awkward attempts at complex ones that are frequently faulty, such as 'Thailand and indonesia figure between 10 to 20 in 1970.' There are frequent errors in grammar and punctuation, including missing articles, incorrect prepositions ('at above 80%'), tense confusion (mixing past data with future projections incorrectly), and subject-verb agreement issues ('the Malaysia expected'). These frequent errors frequently strain comprehension for the reader.
