Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5
The response attempts to address the task by reporting on the given countries, but it fails to present an accurate summary of the visual data. There are severe misinterpretations of the information in the graph; for instance, the student states that the Philippines had the maximum number of inhabitants in 1970 and will be highest with above 80 percent in 2030 and 2040, whereas the data shows Malaysia reaching the highest urbanisation levels by 2040. Furthermore, the overview is confused and inaccurate, containing contradictory and incorrect comparative statements. The selection of data is poorly handled, and the key trends over the fifty-year period and future projections are largely missed or misreported, leading to a partial and flawed response to the prompt.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response is organised into paragraphs, beginning with an introduction followed by body paragraphs, which gives it an overall structure. However, the logical progression is hindered by inaccurate information and confusing statements, making the relationships between ideas unclear. Cohesive devices are used, but they are sometimes mechanical or misused, such as the abrupt transition in 'In contrast, Phillipines had highest with approximatley 32% of total.' Referencing is also occasionally problematic, as seen in vague phrases like 'its number escalated'. Paragraphing is present, but the internal flow within paragraphs lacks clear cohesion due to abrupt shifts in focus between countries and years.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is limited and minimally adequate for the task, with noticeable errors that occasionally impede communication. There are spelling mistakes throughout the text, such as 'counries', 'Thialand', 'poulation', 'Phillipines', 'Philpipines', and 'preffered'. Word choices and collocations are often awkward or inaccurate, such as 'percentage of Malaysian people peaked up' and 'living purpose'. The student attempts some topic-related vocabulary like 'proportion', 'population', and 'percentage', but control is weak, and the lexical range remains basic and repetitive, restricting the precision needed to discuss statistical data effectively.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The grammatical structures used are predominantly simple, with a very limited range of complex forms, and attempts at complex sentences often result in errors. There are frequent mistakes in subject-verb agreement and articles, such as 'The line graph illustrate', 'lowest population was for Indonesia who had around 13%', and 'Phillipines had highest'. Punctuation and prepositions within grammatical patterns also show persistent inaccuracies, such as 'expected population for 2030 to 2040'. These frequent errors create some difficulty for the reader and demonstrate a lack of control over more varied grammatical structures.
