Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5
The response addresses the task only partially, presenting a rudimentary summary of the visual data. While the candidate attempts to report main features and comparisons, the information provided contains significant inaccuracies and misinterpretations of the figures shown in the graph. For instance, the reference to Malaysia's population reaching ninety percent in 2040 lacks precision based on the actual trends, and details regarding other countries such as the Philippines and Indonesia are vague or confused. Furthermore, the overview is limited and lacks clarity, failing to adequately highlight the broader trends across all four nations. To achieve a higher score, the response would need to present a clearer, more accurate overview of the main trends and select key features with greater precision and factual alignment to the source material.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5
The organization of the text displays some overall progression, but the logical flow is frequently disrupted by mechanical and inadequate cohesive devices. Paragraphing is attempted, with separate blocks for the introduction, overview, and body details, but the internal cohesion within paragraphs is weak. Phrases such as 'In the same way' and 'Similarly' are overused and sometimes applied incorrectly where contrast or different trends are being described. Additionally, referencing is occasionally unclear, making it difficult to follow which country or data point is being discussed. To improve in this criterion, the writer needs to ensure a smoother, more logical progression of ideas and utilize a wider, more accurate range of cohesive devices to connect sentences and paragraphs naturally.
Lexical Resource: Band 4.5
The vocabulary used is limited and basic, restricting the response's ability to discuss the data with precision. There are numerous word choice and spelling errors throughout the text, such as 'pridiction' instead of 'prediction', 'steeply rise' instead of 'steep rise', and 'individuls' instead of 'individuals'. The candidate attempts some less common vocabulary, but these attempts are often inaccurate or inappropriate in collocation and form, which can cause some strain for the reader. To reach a higher band, the writer must expand their lexical range, demonstrate better control over word forms (such as nouns and verbs), and reduce spelling errors by using more standard academic vocabulary suited to describing statistical data.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5
The grammatical structures used are very limited in range, consisting mostly of simple and frequently faulty attempts at complex sentences. There are frequent grammatical errors throughout the response, including issues with subject-verb agreement, missing auxiliary verbs, incorrect prepositions, and awkward sentence construction, such as in 'the residents of malaysia at 30%' and 'all other countries also rise their populations'. Punctuation is also inconsistently handled. These frequent errors cause difficulty for the reader and obscure meaning in several places. To improve, the candidate needs to practice forming accurate simple and complex sentences, pay closer attention to verb tenses appropriate for past data and future predictions, and ensure better structural control.
