Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

The response addresses the task only partially. While the student manages to cover some general trends across the four countries, the selection of data is erratic and contains several inaccuracies when compared to the visual source. For instance, the descriptions of the starting points and subsequent changes for countries like Indonesia and the Philippines misreport the actual figures shown in the graph. Furthermore, the overview provided in the second paragraph is weak, incorrectly referring to the countries as 'cities' and failing to clearly outline the overarching trends, such as the consistent upward trajectory of urbanisation in all four nations over the 70-year span. To reach a higher level, the response needs to accurately report key data points and provide a clearer summary of the main comparative features.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

There is some organisation in the response, but it lacks a clear overall progression. The essay is divided into paragraphs, but the logical flow within and between sentences is frequently disrupted by mechanical and faulty cohesion. Phrases such as 'Subsequently', 'Following this', and 'afterwords' are used awkwardly to connect ideas that do not follow in a natural sequence. Additionally, referencing is occasionally unclear, making it difficult for the reader to track which country or time period is being discussed. Paragraphing is attempted, but the internal structure of the body paragraphs lacks unity. To improve, the student should ensure that ideas are sequenced logically and that cohesive devices are used more naturally to guide the reader through the data.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The vocabulary used is limited but minimally adequate to convey basic information about the chart. The student attempts some less common vocabulary, such as 'proportion', 'predicted year', and 'increment', but these attempts are often accompanied by noticeable errors in word choice, collocation, and word form, such as 'populatiom', 'heighest', and 'soar' instead of 'soared'. There are also instances of inappropriate terminology, such as referring to countries as 'cities'. Spelling errors like 'nearlly' and 'Coniquently' occur. These errors cause some difficulty for the reader. To achieve a higher band, the student must expand their lexical range and improve accuracy in spelling, word formation, and contextual collocation.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The response demonstrates a limited range of sentence structures, relying heavily on simple constructions. When the student attempts complex sentences, they are frequently faulty, leading to frequent errors in grammar and punctuation. Issues include persistent problems with subject-verb agreement, incorrect prepositions (e.g., 'from 1970 to 2000' followed by faulty ranges), missing articles, and awkward phrasing. Punctuation errors, such as missing spaces after periods and commas, are also common. These frequent errors can cause difficulty and confusion for the reader. To improve in this criterion, the student needs to demonstrate better control over basic grammatical structures and increase the accuracy of complex sentence forms.
