Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 3.5

You identify the four countries and the period, and you attempt an overview by noting that Malaysia and Indonesia rise. However, the overview is incomplete and some key trends are inaccurate: Malaysia rises to about 84% by 2040, not 87%, while Indonesia reaches about 64%, rather than around 60%. The Philippines does not decline from 2000 to 2040; after falling to roughly 43% in 2010, it recovers to about 56%. Thailand also rises to nearly 50%, not 45%. The response gives very few supporting figures and does not clearly compare the countries. It is also 40 words below the required minimum, limiting the detail available. Select the main contrasts and support them with accurate data.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5

There is a basic attempt to organise the response: an opening and overview are followed by short descriptions of the countries. This gives the reader some sense of the topic, and phrases such as “Overall” and “The philippines” signal shifts between points. However, the progression is difficult to follow because the country descriptions are brief, loosely connected, and sometimes combine several time periods without a clear comparison. For example, the Malaysia sentence moves from 1970–1990 to 2000–2040 without explaining the intervening trend. Paragraphing is present but does not yet support a clear overview-and-details structure. Group the strongest trends into coherent paragraphs and use linking phrases to show contrast and change over time.

Lexical Resource: Band 4.5

You use some relevant task vocabulary, including “percentage,” “population,” “prediction,” “grow,” and “fluction,” so the topic is generally recognisable. However, the range is limited and several word choices, forms, and spellings make the description unclear or unnatural, such as “citis,” “growp,” “increast,” and “slightly highest.” Repeating “slightly” and “grow” also makes it hard to distinguish steady rises, fluctuations, and declines. Use precise trend language and check spelling and collocations; for example, describe a figure as “rose steadily” or “fluctuated,” rather than using “grow” for every movement. More accurate vocabulary would help you report comparisons clearly.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5

You attempt simple statements and some time references, but sentence structures are mostly incomplete or inaccurately formed. For example, “The population living citis malaysia was 1970 to 1990 was growp” lacks a clear grammatical structure, while “The philippines in start years grow” has no correctly formed verb phrase. Articles, capitalization, punctuation, and subject–verb agreement are also inconsistent, and the opening sentence contains several ideas without clear sentence boundaries. These errors often make the intended relationships between countries and years difficult to understand. Practise building complete sentences with a subject and a correctly conjugated verb, such as “Malaysia’s urban population rose from 30% in 1970 to about 46% in 1990.” Then vary these with accurate comparison clauses.
