Student answer (Band 4.5)

This graph show that the information about the percentage of the population in four asian countries living in the cities from1970 to 2020 and give the predictions for 2030 and 2040.

In 1970, the population in indonesia was very low as compared to other asian countries while population in philippines was high from all other countries and population of malaysia was little bit low from philippines.

In 2020, the population in thailand was 30%,population in philippines was 40%, population in indonesia was 50% and the malaysia was the highest population 75% which was rapidly increases.

In 2030 and 2040 , the population in these countries was predited as the population in malaysia should be higher than all other asain countries and the population in thailand should be lower 80% and 45% respectively. The population in these asian countries should be increases very rapildly day by day whih is not good for them.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 3.5

The response identifies the topic and gives a few relevant comparisons, including Indonesia as the lowest in 1970 and Malaysia as the highest in 2020 and in the forecasts. However, it does not provide a clear overview of the main trends across the period, and several figures are inaccurate: in 2020 Thailand was about 34%, not 30%, and the Philippines was about 46%, not 40%. The forecast statement that Thailand would be “lower 80% and 45% respectively” is unclear and misrepresents the data; its figures are about 41% in 2030 and 50% in 2040. The response also adds an unsupported opinion that growth is “not good for them.” It is 138 words, below the 150-word minimum; 13 words copied from the prompt were not counted. Select and accurately compare the key trends, and omit personal commentary.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

There is some basic organisation: the response moves from 1970 to 2020 and then to the forecasts, so the reader can follow its broad time sequence. However, it is presented as one paragraph rather than being divided into a brief introduction, an overview, and detail paragraphs. The opening mostly repeats the task, while the main features are not clearly prioritised. Linking is limited, and the repeated pattern “the population in…” makes the account feel list-like. The final sentence shifts from reporting the graph to an opinion, weakening the progression. Grouping the countries by their trends and using clear links such as “by contrast” or “while” would make the comparisons easier to follow.

Lexical Resource: Band 4.5

The response uses a small set of relevant terms, including “percentage,” “predictions,” “highest,” and “lower,” which helps communicate the basic subject. However, vocabulary is repetitive and several choices or forms are inaccurate, such as “rapidly increases,” “predited,” “asain,” and “rapildly.” Phrases such as “high from all other countries” and “little bit low from” are not natural ways to make comparisons, and “population” is repeatedly used where “urban share” or “proportion living in cities” would be more precise. These errors sometimes make the intended comparison difficult to interpret. Build a wider range of accurate trend and comparison language, and check spelling and collocations before finishing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5

The response attempts both simple statements and longer sentences, and the time references help convey a basic sequence. However, grammatical control is inconsistent. The opening has subject–verb disagreement (“This graph show”) and an incomplete construction (“and give the predictions”); other examples include missing articles in “the malaysia” and “the population in indonesia,” and faulty agreement in “the population…was rapidly increases.” Punctuation is also unreliable, with missing spaces after commas and awkward sentence boundaries. These errors recur and sometimes obscure the intended meaning, particularly in the forecast sentence. Practise accurate subject–verb agreement, articles, and complete sentence structures, then use punctuation to separate each comparison clearly.
