Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

You identify the four countries and report several relevant comparisons, including Malaysia’s strong rise and Indonesia’s growth from a low starting point. However, the task is only partly covered: the opening incorrectly says the period begins in 1920, and the overview that Thailand is the lowest is not accurate for the later years, when the Philippines is below Thailand in 2010 and 2020. Some figures and trends are also imprecise: the Philippines is about 45.5% in 2020, not merely “about 40%,” and Indonesia is projected to reach about 64% in 2040, rather than 60%. Include a concise, accurate overview and compare all four countries across the period.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

The response has some organisation: it begins with an introduction, gives a broad comparison, and then discusses Malaysia, the Philippines and Indonesia. Time markers such as “in 1970,” “in 2020” and “till 2040” help the reader follow the chronology. However, there is no clear overall progression through the data, and Thailand is named but not described. Several ideas are crowded into long sentences, while links such as “but” and “and” do much of the connecting work. The phrase “There are total four countries given” also does not clearly lead into the next point. Group the countries or trends into purposeful paragraphs and use clearer comparisons and references to connect them.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use some relevant chart vocabulary, including “percentage,” “proportion,” “predictions” and “rises,” so the topic is generally understandable. However, the range is limited and several choices or spellings make the report less clear or less appropriate for an academic summary. “Two different life spans” does not describe the time periods, and “peoples percentage” is an awkward expression. There are also repeated spelling errors in country names and words such as “continouesly” and “increses.” Aim for precise, conventional language for describing data, and check spelling carefully. Avoid vague phrases such as “major rise in its graph”; state directly that the urban population share increased.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The response attempts some longer sentences, for example, “as time passes the Malaysian graph rises continouesly,” and uses time clauses to describe change. However, the range of sentence structures is limited, and errors are frequent enough to make some relationships difficult to follow. Examples include “There are total four countries,” “Malaysia had taken,” and “the Malaysian graph rises … and in 2020 it reaches,” where articles, verb forms and tense choices are not controlled. Subject–verb agreement is also problematic in “the Philla[ines] chart was” and “the Phillipines have chances.” Punctuation and spacing around commas and percentages need attention. Practise accurate past-tense reporting and use consistent structures for projected figures.
