Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
You identify the chart’s subject and mention several relevant patterns, including the Philippines’ decline after 1990 and the projected rise in all four countries. However, key comparisons are inaccurate: in 1970 the Philippines was not highest (it was Malaysia, at about 30%, versus the Philippines at 32%—the Philippines was only slightly higher), and by 2020 Malaysia, not the Philippines, had the highest urban share, at about 76%. The statement that the Philippines was “between 70 to 80 percent” appears to confuse it with Malaysia. Thailand was about 23.5% in 1980, not nearly 28%. The overview is also limited: it should clearly contrast Malaysia’s strong rise with the Philippines’ fluctuation and Indonesia’s substantial growth. These misreadings and omissions leave the main features only partially reported.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5
The response follows a broadly chronological structure, moving from the chart introduction to earlier figures, the 2020 situation and then the forecasts. This gives the reader a basic route through the information. However, the ideas are crowded into one paragraph, and progression is weakened by repeated sequencing phrases such as “after it,” “on second” and “at last.” Some references are confusing: “After Indonesia it was Philippines” is difficult to follow, especially because the preceding ranking is inaccurate. The opening also repeats the chart’s subject rather than moving directly to an overview. Separate the response into an introduction, a concise overview and grouped detail paragraphs, and use clear comparisons and linking phrases to show how the countries’ trends relate.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
You use relevant basic terms such as “percentage,” “predictions,” “highest,” “lowest” and “downfall,” so the reader can recognise the topic and some trends. However, the vocabulary is limited and several choices are imprecise or repetitive. “Population” is repeatedly used where “urban share” or “proportion living in cities” would describe the data more accurately; the graph tracks the percentage living in cities, not population growth itself. “Downfall” is not a natural choice for a modest decline, and “line of percentage” is unclear. Spelling and word-form errors, including “infromed,” “Untill” and “predictions” used where “projections” would be more precise, also reduce control. Build a wider set of accurate trend and comparison expressions.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response communicates its general meaning through mostly simple statements and attempts some longer structures, for example, “As per the prediction for 2030 and 2040…” However, the range is limited, and frequent errors in sentence construction and punctuation make the text harder to read. Many sentences run together without spaces after full stops, while clauses are joined without clear punctuation. There are also problems with articles, agreement and verb forms, as in “Philippines have the highest percent” and “Malaysia has 30 percent and Thailand has nearly 28 percent.” The phrase “Until 2020 Philippines has highest percent” also uses an unsuitable tense and omits an article. Practise accurate past-tense reporting and build shorter, correctly punctuated comparison sentences before combining them.
