The graph below gives information about the percentage of the population in four Asian countries living in cities from 1970 to 2020, with predictions for 2030 and 2040. Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 4.5)
This paragraph demonstrates propotion of population in some cities between 1970 to 2020 and also mention the increase or decline for future between 2030 and 2040.
In the graph we can get that the population almost increased and in one next decade it will be more than double in some cities as it can be more than 80% percentage in 2040 and we will discuss it in the next one.
First of all, malaysia has the most population as in the past 1970 it equals with phillippines nevertheless in 1990 Malaysia was more cowerded than the other.
secondly Thailand and indonesia have the less population un the past but not in the future, because of indosnesia was expected to increase and population may get 50% percent and the surprise is that Thailand population may reach between 40% and 50%
A side from that, population may increase as predicted to reach between 30% and 90%

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5
You identify the broad pattern that urban populations generally rise and mention future projections, so the response is relevant to the graph. However, the main features are only minimally reported and several comparisons are inaccurate or unclear. Malaysia did not have the highest figure in 1970: it was about 30%, slightly below the Philippines at 32%; it became higher than the Philippines by 1990. The claim that Indonesia may reach 50% is imprecise, as it is projected to exceed 60% by 2040, while Thailand is expected to approach 50%. The statement that figures may range from 30% to 90% is too vague and the graph does not show any country reaching 90%. Give a clear overview and select accurate key figures.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.0
The response has a basic sequence, using phrases such as “First of all,” “secondly,” and “A side from that,” and it attempts to group countries. However, the progression is difficult to follow because the opening paragraphs do not establish a clear overview, and the final sentence adds a broad range without explaining which countries it refers to. Some linking expressions are mechanical or do not clarify the relationship between ideas; for example, “nevertheless” does not clearly connect the 1970 and 1990 comparison. Paragraphing is limited, and references such as “the next one” are unclear. Organise the report into an introduction, a concise overview, and paragraphs comparing the main trends, using links that show precise relationships.
Lexical Resource: Band 4.5
You attempt some task-related vocabulary, including “population,” “increase,” “decline,” “predicted,” and “reach,” which helps communicate the general subject. However, the range is basic and several word choices or collocations make the meaning unclear, such as “has the most population,” “more cowerded,” and “population may get 50% percent.” There are also noticeable spelling errors, including “propotion,” “phillippines,” and “indosnesia,” which reduce clarity and control. Use standard terms for the measure, such as “urban population” or “proportion living in cities,” and describe figures with “rise to” or “reach approximately.” Check spelling and avoid repeating “population” where a clearer reference is possible.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You attempt both simple statements and longer sentences with clauses, for example, “because of indosnesia was expected to increase,” showing an effort to express reasons and projections. Some basic sentence meaning can be understood, but control is uneven: “This paragraph demonstrates propotion of population…” lacks an article and has an unclear grammatical structure, while “in the past 1970 it equals with…” uses an unsuitable tense and an incomplete comparison pattern. The sentence beginning “First of all” also shifts awkwardly between past and present. Use past tense for historical data and forms such as “is projected to” for forecasts. Build shorter, complete sentences first, then add subordinate clauses with accurate verb forms and punctuation.
