Student answer (Band 5.0)
The line graph provides information about the data of population in four different countries of Asia living in urban area between 1970 and 2020 and also predicts furure for 2030 and 2040.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.0
You identify the graph’s subject and include a broad overview, noting that Malaysia and Indonesia rise and that the Philippines fluctuates. However, the report addresses the task only minimally: it ends partway through a sentence (“and su”), leaving the Philippines, Thailand and Indonesia largely without supporting detail or comparisons. Some figures are also inaccurate: Malaysia was about 46% in 1990, but had reached 76% by 2020, rather than “just over 70 percent”; the forecast for 2040 is about 84%, not approximately 80%. The response is 115 words, below the required 150. To develop the report, cover all four countries, select key start/end values and turning points, and give a complete overview.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
There is a basic attempt to organise the response: an introduction is followed by an overview and a detail paragraph, and “Overall,” “Firstly,” and “However” signal relationships between ideas. This gives the reader some structure. However, there is no clear progression through the data because the final paragraph stops abruptly at “and su,” and most countries are not discussed. The contrast marker “However” also introduces a Philippines detail without completing the comparison. Build a complete sequence, for example by grouping the steadily rising countries and then describing the Philippines’ fluctuation, and use paragraphing to separate the overview from the main comparisons.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The response uses some relevant task vocabulary, including “line graph,” “urban,” “increased,” “percentage,” and “fluctuate,” so the topic is generally understandable. However, the range is limited and several expressions are inaccurate or repetitive, such as “data of population,” “urban city cities,” and “constantly moving up.” Spelling errors—including “furure,” “percenteages,” “Howeever,” “Thiland,” and “Pillippines”—also reduce precision. Choose concise, conventional collocations such as “the proportion of the population living in cities” and “rose steadily.” Check country names and key terms carefully, and vary verbs such as “rose,” “climbed,” and “increased” where appropriate.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You attempt both simple and more extended sentence forms, including a contrast with “while” and a sequence using “then.” However, control is uneven, and errors sometimes make the intended relationships difficult to follow. For example, “the figures of Philippines are fluctuate” has an incorrect verb construction, while “the population of Thiland slowly moving up” lacks a finite verb. In “the data of Pillippines were remained constant,” the passive form is faulty, and “between 1970 and 1990” needs a clearer grammatical link to the percentage change. Practise accurate present-tense overview statements and past-tense descriptions, with complete clauses and consistent subject–verb agreement.
