Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.0
The response makes a limited attempt to describe the graph, but it does not consistently report the information accurately or focus on the main trends. It identifies Malaysia as the leading country by 2040, which is correct, but gives Thailand at 60% and Indonesia at 40%, whereas the chart shows approximately 50% and 64%, respectively. The description of the current figures is also substantially inaccurate: Indonesia is about 52%, not 35%, and Thailand is about 34%, not 55%. There is no clear overview of the contrasting trends, such as Indonesia’s strong rise and the Philippines’ fluctuation. The comments about reproduction and government planning are not supported by the graph. Select key trends and compare the series using accurate figures.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.0
There is some basic sequencing: the response introduces the graph, gives figures, and then adds concluding comments. However, the information is not arranged coherently enough to guide the reader through the data. The opening says the graph shows how groups “grow,” which does not clearly establish that it tracks the urban population share, and the paragraph moves abruptly from predictions to “currently” without defining the year meant. The final comments about reproduction and Malaysian people being the majority do not connect logically to the reported figures. Use a clear structure—introduction, overview, then grouped comparisons—and link each point to a specific period or trend.
Lexical Resource: Band 4.5
The response uses a basic range of relevant terms, including “graph,” “percentage,” “predictions,” and “population,” so the general topic is usually recognisable. However, vocabulary is repetitive and some choices are imprecise: “population growth” suggests changes in total population rather than the proportion living in cities, while “different groups of people” does not accurately describe the four countries. Spelling errors such as “Phillipenes” and “wity” also weaken clarity, and “keep on reproducing” is unsuitable for an objective chart summary. Use precise data language and check country names and spelling. For example, describe the “urban population share” and say that it “increased” or “levelled off.”
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response communicates several basic ideas through simple sentences and attempts a longer sentence beginning “since 1970,” but grammatical control is uneven. Errors include subject–verb agreement in “the different groups of people grows” and “there have been a steady growth,” as well as the incorrect construction “the government need to plan.” Sentence boundaries and capitalization are also inconsistent, as in “2040.currently” and the lowercase “since” and “indonesia.” These problems do not prevent the reader from understanding every point, but they make the writing less controlled. Practise accurate agreement and sentence boundaries, and use straightforward past and future forms to describe the chart.
