Student answer (Band 4.0)

The line graph illustrates the percentage of the population in four different Asian countries. Living in cities from 1970 to 2020 with predictions for 2030 and 2040.

Overall, the Malaysia population will increase and the Thailand population will decrease people living in cities.

To begin with, Malaysia and Indonesia the both countries people increase drastically too move-on in cities. Because the population will increase in future. In 1970 the ppopulation was less in both countries but Malaysia at the same year stand on 30% people live in cities and in future it will grow. Thailand and Indonesia was approximately same but in the middle of 2000 and 2010 the Indonesia cross the 60 percentage of population live in cities in Indonesia.

In conclusion, many people in all the four countries will move-on to the cities because the population will drastically grow in future. Mostly Malaysia population will be increasing in future.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 3.0

The response identifies the topic and makes a few relevant observations, including Malaysia’s rise and Indonesia’s growth. However, the overview is inaccurate: it says Thailand’s urban population will decrease, whereas the graph shows a gradual increase, reaching about 50% by 2040. The claim that Indonesia crosses 60% between 2000 and 2010 is also incorrect; it reaches about 43% in 2010 and passes 60% only around 2030. Most figures and comparisons are omitted, and the conclusion repeats a broad prediction rather than summarising the main trends. The response is 136 words, below the required 150, which further limits its coverage. Include a clear, accurate overview and select key comparisons across the period.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5

There is a basic paragraph structure: an introduction, an overview, a body paragraph and a conclusion. This gives the response some organisation, and phrases such as “To begin with” and “In conclusion” signal stages. However, progression within the body is difficult to follow because several countries and time periods are combined without a clear comparison. For example, “Thailand and Indonesia was approximately same” is not linked clearly to a specific year or trend. The conclusion also repeats the prediction about future growth rather than adding a concise synthesis. Organise the body by meaningful comparisons—for instance, Malaysia’s high projected level versus Indonesia’s rapid rise—and use clear references to years and countries.

Lexical Resource: Band 4.5

The response uses some task-related vocabulary, including “percentage,” “population,” “predictions,” and “increase,” so the general subject is usually recognisable. However, the range is limited and several expressions are inaccurate or unnatural, such as “move-on in cities,” “cross the 60 percentage,” and “stand on 30%.” Repetition of “population,” “cities,” and “increase” also restricts precision. There is a spelling error in “ppopulation,” and “drastically” is not a suitable description for every trend shown. Build a more precise set of graph terms, such as “urban share,” “rise steadily,” “reach,” and “overtake,” and check collocations before using them.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5

The response attempts both simple and longer sentence forms, and some basic clauses communicate the intended topic. However, grammatical control is inconsistent, particularly in sentence boundaries, agreement, and verb forms. The opening splits the sentence after “countries,” leaving “Living in cities…” as a fragment. In “the Thailand population will decrease people living in cities,” the sentence structure does not express the intended relationship clearly. “Thailand and Indonesia was” also has incorrect subject–verb agreement, while “Malaysia and Indonesia the both countries people increase” has a faulty clause structure. Use complete sentences with a clear subject and verb, and practise accurate past-versus-future forms when describing historical data and projections.
