Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 3.0
The response identifies the chart’s subject and time span, and it attempts an overview by noting general increases. However, it does not adequately summarise the main features: the claim that every country’s figure “increase[s]…up to twice” by 2040 is inaccurate, and the exception for Indonesia is not explained. The response begins a comparison—“Philippines was leading”—but ends before giving the relevant trends or figures, so the account is very limited and incomplete. It also contains only 87 words, below the required 150, leaving too little space to select and report key comparisons. To improve, complete the comparison across all four countries, accurately describe Malaysia’s high projected level and Indonesia’s strong rise, and support the overview with selected figures.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
There is a basic attempt to organise the response: an introduction is followed by an overview and then a detail paragraph. The opening also establishes the period and that later years are forecasts. However, the progression is not sustained because the final paragraph stops mid-sentence at “followe,” and the reader receives almost no supporting detail. Linking is limited to phrases such as “Overall,” “apart from that,” and “Analyzing the graph,” with the latter transition not leading to a developed comparison. The overview’s ideas are also joined awkwardly. Build complete paragraphs with a clear overview, then group and compare the countries’ trends; use linking expressions to show contrast and change rather than relying on a few generic transitions.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The response uses some task-relevant vocabulary, including “line graph,” “percentage,” “predicts,” and “leading,” so the topic is generally recognisable. There are also attempts at more descriptive language, such as “steep increase.” However, several choices are inaccurate or unnatural: “increase in population” suggests population size rather than the urban share, and “increase…up to twice” does not clearly express the intended comparison. Spelling errors such as “reporesents” and “followe” are noticeable, while “more detailingly” is an awkward formation. Use precise chart language such as “urban population share,” “rose,” “remained,” and “was projected to reach,” and check spelling and collocations before submitting.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response attempts a mixture of sentence forms, including a complex opening with a relative clause and a separate overview. Some meaning is understandable, but control is uneven. The first sentence joins two independent clauses with a comma, and the overview’s construction—“the increase in population is upto twice”—is grammatically unclear. Capitalisation is inconsistent in “Each country,” and the final sentence is incomplete, ending with “followe.” These issues make the relationships between ideas difficult to follow. Practise writing complete sentences with clear subjects and verbs, and use accurate comparative structures, for example, “The proportion is projected to roughly double.” Proofread punctuation and ensure every sentence is finished.
