Student answer (Band 6.5)

In many countries, increasing number of people are becoming curious about the past of the house or building they live in. The primary reason behind this is superstition among individuals and they can get the information in that regard from the neighborhood residents.

The main reason is the superstition among individuals especially among older generation. To explain, they believe in ghosts and mystical subjects which make them intrigued about the past of the places they are living in. As a result, they may want to know if something bad happened there which can effect them in their future. For instance, many individuals seek advice from astrologers and religious saints before moving to a new place to avoid any risk from supernatural beings. Additionally, people are curious because they are interested in the history and genuinely want to know if the place has any historical significance.

In order to research this new residents can ask from the old residents in the neighborhood. This is because, those people are living there from a long time and they are well aware of the past incidents related to the places in the surrounding, as they would have witnessed everything. Therefore, they can be considered as one of the most reliable and convenient source for relevant information.

To conclude, the reasons behind the curiosity in history of the places in which people are living is their beliefs in supernatural things and also to gain knowledge. People can research this by asking the residents living in the same area or building.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response addresses both parts of the prompt: reasons for the interest and methods for research. However, the development is quite limited. The reasons provided—superstition and historical interest—are mentioned but not deeply explored, and the research method is restricted to asking neighbors. The essay is brief, hovering just above the minimum word count, which limits the depth of the arguments. To reach a higher band, you should expand on your ideas with more detailed examples or alternative perspectives, such as the role of digital archives or public records, rather than relying solely on anecdotal evidence from neighbors.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The essay is organized into clear paragraphs, each with a central topic. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'The main reason', 'As a result', and 'In order to research', which help guide the reader. However, the progression of ideas is somewhat mechanical, and the transition between the two main body paragraphs could be smoother. The concluding paragraph is a bit repetitive, simply restating the points made earlier without adding a final synthesis or broader thought. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring a more sophisticated flow between sentences would enhance the overall coherence.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

The vocabulary is adequate for the task but lacks variety and precision. You use basic terms like 'bad', 'things', and 'places' repeatedly. While you attempt some topic-specific vocabulary like 'superstition', 'mystical', and 'historical significance', the range is limited. There are also minor collocation issues, such as 'living there from a long time' (should be 'for a long time') and 'source for relevant information' (should be 'source of'). To improve, try to incorporate more academic collocations and synonyms to avoid repetition and demonstrate a more flexible command of the language.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical errors. For example, 'increasing number of people' should be 'an increasing number of people', and 'effect them' should be 'affect them'. There are also issues with preposition usage and article omission. While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of articles would significantly improve the accuracy of your writing.
