In some countries, more and more people are becoming interested in finding out about the history of the house or building they live in.

What are the reasons for this?

How can people research this?

Student answer (Band 7.0)

There is a growing trend among people wanting to uncover the pasts of the place they live on. People usually enquire the history to find out if the house witnessed any mortality before so that they will have mental peace before purchasing it or moving in. Additionally, the role of the social media and the society running on trends are another factor motivating people towards searching history of their place.

The primary reason behind this curiosity is evident from the increasing psychological trauma among people living in a house that saw deaths. Some people who had purchased a place to live without knowing its past, upon finding out about people who died there, experience emotional distress. This is why they show interest in the history so that they remain mentally prepared and thorough with their purchasing decision. Furthermore, setting of trends by influencers, where they delve into the historical insights about their house and present in an interesting manner, has increasingly compelled the public to do the same. For instance, a US youtuber in 2011, found out about his house being used as an auction house in the past thereby finding a lot of pieces of ancient items in his backyard. Subsequently, increasing number of people were reported to be searching information about their own house.

In order to look for information, the starting can be done through the property managers. There are often a lot of documentation available to them, and by interviewing them several things can be uncovered. If they are reluctant, then the enquiry can be taken to the neighbors in the locality. More older the neighbor is, more depth of history can be found. Furthermore, the internet is often a big help, more likely in the case when the history of that locality or the house is well documented online.

To sum up, it is the people curiosity and the desire to not have any emotional distress later on that motivates them to look for any available history of their place. While the internet can be a big help in this research, interview with people around that place is the immense source of historical facts.
