Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The response addresses both parts of the prompt: reasons for researching property history and methods for doing so. The ideas are relevant, such as safety concerns and the use of archives or the internet. However, the development is somewhat superficial. For instance, the example regarding 'home robbery' is unclear and lacks logical connection to the broader point about historical research. While the main points are present, they lack the depth and detailed support required for a higher band. The response is balanced, but the explanation of the reasons could be more thoroughly explored to demonstrate a more sophisticated understanding of the topic.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, with an introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'To commence with', 'furthermore', and 'in addition', though some are used mechanically. There is a clear progression of ideas from the reasons to the methods. However, the referencing is occasionally weak, and some transitions feel abrupt. The paragraphing is appropriate, but the internal flow within paragraphs could be improved by better linking sentences to ensure a smoother reading experience. Overall, the structure is coherent, but the use of cohesive devices lacks the flexibility required for a higher score.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing the writer to convey their meaning clearly. There are attempts to use topic-specific vocabulary such as 'historical archives', 'renovations', and 'financial considerations'. However, there are several errors in word choice and spelling, such as 'recodes' (records), 'formal owners' (former owners), and 'Nowdays' (Nowadays). The range of vocabulary is somewhat limited, and the repetition of basic structures and terms prevents the essay from demonstrating a more sophisticated lexical range. To improve, the student should focus on accurate spelling and using more precise collocations.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The essay contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors throughout. Examples include 'In few nation several individuals was becoming' (In a few nations, several individuals are becoming) and 'does any illegal activities happened' (did any illegal activities happen). Punctuation is also inconsistent, with missing spaces after commas and periods. While the meaning is generally clear despite these errors, the high frequency of basic grammatical mistakes, particularly with subject-verb agreement and verb tense, limits the score. The student needs to focus on proofreading for basic grammatical accuracy and sentence construction.
