IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some countries, more and more people are becoming interested in finding out about the history of the house or building they live in.

What are the reasons for this?

How can people research this?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 7.0)

There is a growing trend in the population in some areas where people increasingly keen on discovering the past architecture and housing that they are currently living. From my perspective, these are due to various causes, including builidng connections from the past and learning experience for future innovation.

Humans rely on social interactions. This means the majority of people enjoy preserving their neighbourhoods to something meaningful. On top of this, understanding the history of the places they occupied is crucial. Not only do people recognise their significance in the areas they live in, but they also discover more links and strengthen relationships between their neighbours due to the profound history of community. For instance, family used to gather in the same area in the past. Over thousands of year, even though the hereditary between neighbour was lost, people may had once shared genes and were each other's relatives tracing back in history. Thus, this undoubedly generates connections with neighbours.

Beside the emotional linkage, the design and appearance of old architecture are useful for urban development. Taking the Pyrimad in Egypt as an example, its intellectual composition inspires hundreds of Egyptian archeologists and designers to restructure the kingdoms of the past and invent modern buildings. Its influence affects around the world to raise awareness of preserving history. Other than this famous masterpiece, some localised houses are also sophisticated. In fact, residents even choose to retain the original design of their house as it is practically helpful and fashionable.

Moving onto the way in how to find out the history, going to local museums is always useful. This is becuase lots of information are provided with detail explanations up to the timeline of development for a specific building. Another method is looking at prevoius pictures, the environment and building were often captured and suggest great references for the appearance and function of the buildings.

In conclusion, interactions and bluprint for urban designs are both essential reasons for understanding history of building. Visiting museums, exhibitions and analysing old photographs are some method to research it.

The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task. There are attempts to use less common items like 'hereditary', 'sophisticated', and 'archeologists'. However, there are several spelling errors ('builidng', 'Pyrimad', 'prevoius', 'becuase', 'bluprint') and some minor word choice inaccuracies, such as 'hereditary between neighbour' instead of 'heritage' or 'connection'. While these errors do not impede communication, they prevent the essay from reaching a higher band score. The vocabulary is sufficient to convey the intended meaning clearly.
