Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
The response addresses both parts of the prompt—reasons for interest and methods of research—but the development is insufficient. The essay is significantly under the 250-word minimum, which limits the depth of the arguments. While the reasons (curiosity, historical events, academic interest) and methods (internet, archives, oral history) are relevant, they are presented in a list-like fashion without adequate elaboration or supporting examples. The brevity prevents a full exploration of the topic, resulting in a superficial treatment of the prompt. To improve, you must expand each point with detailed explanations and more comprehensive examples.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The essay is organised into paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the structure. However, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat mechanical and repetitive (e.g., 'Firstly', 'Secondly', 'Furthermore', 'On the other hand'). The progression of ideas is logical, but the lack of depth makes the transitions feel abrupt. Referencing is generally clear, but the overall flow is hindered by the short, choppy nature of the sentences. To reach a higher band, focus on using a wider variety of linking words and ensure that sentences are connected more fluidly to create a cohesive argument.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The vocabulary is adequate for the task but lacks the range and precision required for higher bands. There are several instances of word-choice errors and awkward phrasing, such as 'History play significant role' (should be 'plays a significant role') and 'becoming interesting in' (should be 'becoming interested in'). The vocabulary is somewhat repetitive, and there is little attempt to use less common or more sophisticated lexical items. To improve, focus on learning collocations and ensuring that word forms (nouns, adjectives, verbs) are used correctly in context.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The response contains frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede the flow of reading. Examples include subject-verb agreement issues ('many people has curiosity', 'this old building have'), missing articles ('about history of the old monuments'), and awkward sentence structures ('people want to know that what happened to those building'). The range of structures is limited, consisting mostly of simple sentences. There is a lack of complex sentence forms, which are necessary to demonstrate grammatical control. Focusing on basic accuracy, such as pluralisation and verb tense consistency, is essential for improvement.
