Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The response addresses both parts of the prompt (reasons and research methods). However, the ideas are significantly under-developed. The essay is only 201 words, failing to meet the 250-word minimum requirement. Because the response is under-length, the development of ideas is limited, resulting in a superficial treatment of the topic. To achieve a higher band, you must expand on your points with specific examples, personal anecdotes, or more detailed explanations. For instance, instead of simply stating that people can 'search online,' you could explain how digital databases or historical land registry websites provide specific insights into architectural heritage.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is logically organized into clear paragraphs, each with a central theme. The progression of ideas is easy to follow, and you use basic cohesive devices such as 'Additionally,' 'For example,' and 'Therefore' to link sentences. However, the cohesion is somewhat mechanical and repetitive. To improve, try to vary your linking words and use more sophisticated referencing to connect ideas across sentences rather than just at the beginning of them. The paragraphing is appropriate, but the overall structure feels quite simplistic due to the limited length of the response.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task but lacks range and sophistication. You rely on common, everyday language such as 'interesting,' 'good,' and 'find out.' While these words are accurate, they do not demonstrate the lexical flexibility required for higher bands. There is also a minor spelling error ('intetested'). To improve, you should aim to incorporate more topic-specific vocabulary related to history, architecture, and research methodologies. Using more precise synonyms will help elevate the tone of your writing and demonstrate a wider command of the English language.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

The essay uses a mix of simple and compound sentences, which are generally error-free. However, there is a lack of complex grammatical structures, such as relative clauses, passive voice, or conditional sentences, which are necessary to demonstrate a higher level of control. While the grammar is accurate, the limited range of structures keeps the score in the mid-range. To improve, try to integrate more complex sentence forms to express your ideas more fluidly. Ensure that you proofread for minor slips, such as the extra space before the comma in the opening sentence.
