Student answer (Band 6.5)

Recently in some countries the number of people interested in finding about the history of the place they are living in are increasing. This essay will go over the reasons for why they might be interested and how can these individuals gain knowledge about the history of the place they live in.

People may be fascinated by the history of the place they live in by numerous reasons, one of which could be solving a property dispute after the head of a joint family passes away due to which the next of kin has to be determined. Moreover, another reason could be if a family is selling a house which they have owned for many generations and they have to find the value of the house so it could be listed at a fair price. Moving on, if a new individual is moving in to a new house or building they might want to learn about the infrastructure of the place to assure their safety.

Learning about the history is the challenging part because history requires to be kept safe for a long period of time. The first step should be finding a trusted source to learn from. This could be an old family member living in the house or a old document folder of that specific house or building which has details like past ownership, what specific infrastructure has been used to build the house. On the other hand, if the place holds a sentimental value in history. For example, if the place was previously owned by a famous celebrity or was a safe house during a world war you should scavenge through a library to find a book or you could look for articles online.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response addresses both parts of the prompt: reasons for interest in building history and methods for research. However, the development of ideas is somewhat superficial. For instance, the reasons provided—such as property disputes or determining house value—are practical but not fully explored in terms of the 'interest' mentioned in the prompt. The research methods are mentioned, but the explanation of how to use these sources is brief. To reach a higher band, you should expand on the 'why' and 'how' with more detailed examples or deeper analysis, ensuring the connection between the interest and the research process is more cohesive.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The essay is organized into clear paragraphs, each with a central theme. There is a logical progression from the introduction to the reasons, and then to the research methods. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'Moreover,' 'Moving on,' and 'On the other hand,' which help guide the reader. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and the referencing within sentences could be smoother. For example, the sentence 'People may be fascinated... by numerous reasons, one of which could be...' is a bit clunky. Improving the flow between sentences would enhance the overall coherence.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing the message to be conveyed clearly. You use some topic-specific terms like 'infrastructure,' 'property dispute,' and 'next of kin.' However, the range is somewhat limited, and there are instances of imprecise word choice, such as 'scavenge through a library' (a more natural collocation would be 'search through' or 'consult'). There is also a slight repetition of basic phrasing. To improve, try to incorporate more sophisticated synonyms and collocations related to historical research and real estate.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

The essay contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is always clear, there are several grammatical errors. For example, 'the number of people... are increasing' should be 'is increasing' (subject-verb agreement). Additionally, 'history requires to be kept safe' is awkward; 'history needs to be preserved' would be more accurate. There are also minor punctuation and phrasing issues, such as 'a old document' instead of 'an old document.' While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score.
