Student answer (Band 6.0)
Nowadays, many people want to know about the history of the house or building they live in. They are interested in finding out who lived there before, when it was built, and what happened there in the past. I will give the reasons for this and how people can get this information.
There are many reasons why people want to know the history of their home. First people are curious about the past. They want to know about the previous owners and the stories connected with the house. Second, they want to know if the house had any problem before, such as a fire, flood, or major damage. This information helps them take better care of the house. Another reason is that an old house with and interesting history may become more valuable. For example, if a famous person lived in the house, its value may increase, and more people may want to buy it.
There are different ways to learn about the history of a house. People can visit local government offices to check property records and building details. They can also use the internet to search for old news, photos, and other information. Another good way is to talk to old neighbors or previous owners because they may know many interesting facts. In addition, local libraries often have old maps, books, and records that can help people learn more about the building.
In conclusion, people want to know the history of their home because they are curious, want to know about past problems, and hope to increase the value of their property. They can find this information through government records, the internet, libraries, and local people.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response addresses both parts of the prompt: the reasons for interest in building history and the methods for researching it. The ideas are relevant and clearly presented. However, the development is somewhat basic. For instance, the point about property value is mentioned but could be expanded with more specific detail or a more nuanced explanation of how historical significance impacts market demand. While the response is clear and covers all requirements, it lacks the depth of analysis required for a higher band. The introduction and conclusion are functional but brief. To improve, ensure that each supporting point is fully explored with a clear example or a deeper explanation of the underlying logic.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The essay is logically organized with a clear structure. Each paragraph has a central theme, and the progression of ideas is easy to follow. Cohesive devices such as 'First', 'Second', 'Another reason', and 'In addition' are used effectively to link sentences and paragraphs. However, the use of these devices is somewhat mechanical and repetitive. The transition between ideas could be smoother to create a more natural flow. Paragraphing is used appropriately, with a clear introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion. The overall arrangement is coherent, but the range of cohesive devices could be more varied to achieve a higher band.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The vocabulary is adequate for the task and allows for clear communication. The student uses relevant terms such as 'property records', 'government offices', and 'historical significance'. However, the range is somewhat limited, and there is a reliance on common, everyday language. There are no significant errors in word choice, but the essay lacks the 'less common' or 'sophisticated' lexical items that would demonstrate a higher level of proficiency. To reach a higher band, the student should aim to incorporate more precise academic collocations and synonyms to avoid repetition and add nuance to their arguments.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The response demonstrates a good control of basic grammar and sentence structure. Most sentences are error-free, and the meaning is always clear. There is a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, such as the use of conditional structures ('if a famous person lived in the house...') and relative clauses. While the grammar is generally accurate, the range of complex structures is somewhat limited. There are no major errors that impede communication, but the writing lacks the variety and flexibility in sentence construction that would characterize a higher band. Punctuation is generally correct throughout the text.
