Student answer (Band 6.0)

Individuals of some nations are increasingly interested in researching the history of their homes. This trend is driven by natural curiosity, and individuals can conduct research by asking their parents or simply searching the internet.

There is a vast range of reasons for this scenario but the most important one is curiosity. Every person in this world has one characteristic in common which is an eagerness to know about the things around them. Curiosity drives a person to think about the origin or background of the home or building in which they live. For instance, when I was a kid, I once wondered about the history of the building I was living in. Then, I asked my father about it, and he told me.

When researching, intelligent people usually consider two main sources. The first is asking their elders, and the second is browsing the internet. Elders often know a lot about their local history and homes, so people should talk to them first. If the elders do not know, then one should use the internet. Almost every type of historical data is available online, making it a great source as well. For example, my close cousin did not know the history of the building he lives in, so he used both methods to learn about his accommodation. In the end, he succeeded.

In conclusion, researching the history of homes is a good thing which mostly happens due to a person's curiosity. It can be done both by talking to elders or by surfing the internet.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The response addresses both parts of the prompt: reasons for the interest and methods for research. However, the development of ideas is quite superficial. For instance, the explanation of 'curiosity' is repetitive, and the research methods are described in a very simplistic manner. While the task is addressed, the ideas lack the depth and analytical detail required for a higher band. The examples provided are personal and brief, which limits the overall impact of the argument. To improve, you should expand on the societal or cultural reasons for this interest and provide more sophisticated research techniques beyond just 'asking elders' or 'browsing the internet'.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Each paragraph has a central topic, and the progression of ideas is easy to follow. However, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat mechanical and repetitive (e.g., 'The first is...', 'The second is...'). There is a reliance on simple transitions, and the flow between sentences could be more sophisticated. Paragraphing is used appropriately, but the internal cohesion within paragraphs could be improved by using a wider variety of linking words and better referencing to avoid repetitive sentence structures.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task but lacks the range and precision expected at higher levels. You rely on very common, everyday language such as 'good thing', 'a lot', and 'things around them'. While the meaning is always clear, there is little attempt to use less common or more academic vocabulary. Collocations are generally accurate, but the overall lexical profile is quite basic. To reach a higher band, you should incorporate more topic-specific terminology related to history, architecture, or research methodologies to demonstrate a more flexible and sophisticated range.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the grammar is generally accurate and errors are rare, the range of structures is limited. Most sentences follow a standard subject-verb-object pattern. There is a lack of more complex grammatical features such as passive voice, conditional sentences, or varied subordinate clauses, which are necessary to demonstrate higher-level control. Punctuation is generally correct, but the overall grammatical complexity is quite low, which restricts the potential for a higher score in this criterion.
