Student answer (Band 6.0)

A growing number of individuals, across a few nations, are becoming interested in knowing about the history of the house or building they live in. The reasons for this could be to satisfy personal curiosity or to ensure it's stability. This could be done by inquiring some old neighbours or related government offices.

One of the reasons for the interest could be people's inquisitiveness about knowing the history behind their homes and apartments. Who lived there before them , how they lived could be some questions arising in their minds. Any chance of a famous person living there, gives them an edge while reselling that property. For instance, in Northern Pakistan when the owners of a house discovered it belonged to a popular Bollywood celebrity before partition, its price skyrockted overnight. Another reason could be to ensure the durability of the structure. The individuals would want to stay informed of any dangers or reconstruction required.

People can research this by inquiring old neighbours living in the same vicinity, who may be able to provide details in greater depth. This information is likely to be highly accurate and detailed since it comes from a primary source. Another way could be by checking the property deeds. This could be available at the tax or land related government departments.

In conclusion, many people are interested to know the history behind their accommodations. This could be due to personal curiosity or to ensure safety and could be done by talking to the people living around or the official government departments.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses both parts of the prompt: reasons for the interest and methods of research. The ideas are relevant, such as personal curiosity, property value, and structural safety. However, the development is somewhat thin. While the example of the Bollywood celebrity in Northern Pakistan is interesting, the explanation of how to research property deeds is quite brief. To reach a higher band, you should expand on the 'how' by explaining the process of visiting archives or using digital databases in more detail. The position is clear, but the overall depth of the argument is limited, keeping it at a solid level for a standard response.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is logically organized into clear paragraphs, each with a distinct focus. You use some cohesive devices, such as 'For instance' and 'In conclusion,' which help the flow. However, the transition between ideas within paragraphs could be smoother. For example, the jump from 'inquisitiveness' to 'reselling that property' is a bit abrupt. Additionally, some referencing is slightly mechanical. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring that each sentence flows naturally into the next would enhance the coherence of your writing. Overall, the structure is clear and easy to follow.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'inquisitiveness,' 'vicinity,' and 'accommodations.' There are some minor inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'inquiring some old neighbours' (should be 'inquiring of' or 'asking') and 'its price skyrockted' (spelling error). While you attempt to use less common vocabulary, the range is somewhat limited. To improve, try to incorporate more precise collocations and academic phrasing. For instance, instead of 'knowing the history,' you could use 'uncovering the historical background' or 'tracing the provenance' of a building.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are some grammatical errors, such as 'ensure it's stability' (should be 'its'), 'inquiring some old neighbours' (preposition error), and 'This could be available' (subject-verb agreement with 'deeds'). While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. You have a good grasp of basic structures, but to achieve a higher band, you should aim for more error-free complex sentences and ensure consistent control over punctuation and possessive forms.
