Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
The response addresses both parts of the prompt: reasons for the interest in house history and methods for researching it. However, the development of ideas is limited. The reasons provided, such as 'curiosity' and 'cultural history', are mentioned but not fully explained or supported with depth. The examples provided, such as 'talking to older neighbours', are relevant but brief. To improve, you should expand on the 'why'—for instance, explaining how understanding a building's history fosters a sense of belonging or preserves heritage. The conclusion is a bit repetitive and does not effectively summarise the main points. Overall, the response covers the requirements but lacks the depth expected for a higher band.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5
The essay is organised into clear paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the structure. However, the use of cohesive devices is often mechanical or inaccurate. Phrases like 'By means of' are used incorrectly to introduce lists or examples, which disrupts the flow. There are also issues with referencing; for example, in the second paragraph, 'By means of, Cultural and family history' is grammatically disjointed. While there is a logical progression from reasons to methods, the transitions between sentences are sometimes abrupt. Improving the variety and accuracy of linking words (e.g., 'consequently', 'furthermore', 'in addition to') would significantly enhance the coherence of your writing.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The vocabulary is generally adequate to convey the message, but it is quite repetitive and lacks precision. You frequently use basic terms like 'history', 'old', and 'people'. There are also noticeable errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'shaping more influence for previous generation' and 'can aware of', which is grammatically incorrect. To reach a higher band, you need to demonstrate a wider range of vocabulary, including less common lexical items related to the topic, such as 'architectural heritage', 'genealogical records', or 'historical significance'. Focus on using words in their correct context to avoid confusion.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The essay contains a mix of simple and some attempted complex sentence structures, but accuracy is inconsistent. There are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with verb forms and prepositions, such as 'many individual may want to about story' and 'interested learn about'. Subject-verb agreement is also an issue, as seen in 'it can helps owner'. Punctuation is generally functional, but the sentence construction often feels awkward or incomplete. To improve, focus on mastering basic sentence patterns and ensuring that verbs are correctly conjugated. Reducing these frequent errors is essential for achieving a higher score in this criterion.
