Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 4.5
The response fails to meet the minimum word count requirement of 250 words, reaching only 202 words. This significantly impacts the development of ideas. While you identify reasons and research methods, the points are under-developed and lack sufficient explanation or illustrative examples. The conclusion is also incomplete, consisting of a sentence fragment. To improve, you must expand on your arguments with specific examples and ensure all parts of the prompt are addressed in full, coherent paragraphs. The current length and lack of depth prevent a higher score.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The essay is divided into paragraphs, but the logical progression is weak. The use of cohesive devices is limited and often mechanical, such as 'one most common reason' and 'on the other hand'. Referencing is sometimes unclear, and the transition between ideas is abrupt. The final paragraph is not a complete sentence, which disrupts the overall flow. To improve, focus on using a wider variety of linking words and ensure that each paragraph has a clear topic sentence followed by supporting details that flow logically into the next point.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The vocabulary is basic and repetitive, often relying on simple phrasing. There are frequent errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'demonstrating interest in discovery of home' instead of 'demonstrating an interest in discovering the history of their homes'. Phrases like 'egger to know' (eager) and 'government agent or worker' show a limited range of vocabulary. To achieve a higher band, you should work on using more precise academic vocabulary and collocations, and ensure that your spelling is accurate throughout the text.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The essay contains frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede communication. There are issues with article usage (e.g., 'the history of owner'), subject-verb agreement, and sentence structure (e.g., 'how can build it'). Many sentences are fragmented or lack necessary components, such as the opening sentence which lacks a main verb. The range of structures is limited, consisting mostly of simple sentences. To improve, focus on mastering basic sentence construction, including correct verb tenses and the use of articles, before attempting more complex grammatical structures.
