Student answer (Band 7.0)

It is true that an increasing number of people are becoming interested in finding out about the history of the house or building where they live. This essay will discuss the main reasons for this trend and explain how people can obtain information about the history of their homes.

One major reason why people research the history of their homes is that they want to learn more about their ancestors. By investigating an old house, they may discover who lived there previously and how earlier generations lived. This can help people understand their family background and preserve important memories and traditions. Another reason is related to safety. Some houses and buildings may be very old, and their age and previous condition can affect their safety. Therefore, residents may want to find out when the building was constructed and whether it has undergone major repairs or renovations.

There are several ways in which people can obtain this information. First, they can examine old documents related to their property, such as ownership records, building plans and historical photographs. These documents may provide useful information about previous owners and changes made to the property over time. Another useful source is older people in the local community. Elderly residents may remember previous owners or important events that took place in the building. Finally, people can search online. Government websites and digital archives may contain information about land ownership, property records and historical buildings.

In conclusion, people are increasingly interested in discovering the history of their homes mainly because they want to learn about their ancestors and ensure the safety of their properties. They can research this history through old documents, local residents and online sources.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response addresses both parts of the prompt clearly. You have identified two distinct reasons (ancestral connection and safety) and provided three logical methods for research (documents, local knowledge, and online resources). The ideas are relevant and well-supported. To reach a higher band, you could provide more specific examples or elaborate further on the implications of these findings. For instance, explaining how a historical discovery might influence a homeowner's decision to renovate or preserve a building would add depth to your argument and demonstrate a more sophisticated level of task development.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The essay is well-organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Each paragraph has a central theme, and the progression of ideas is logical. You use cohesive devices effectively, such as 'One major reason', 'Another reason', 'First', and 'Finally', which guide the reader through your points. The paragraphing is appropriate and contributes to the overall clarity of the text. The flow is smooth, and the relationship between ideas is consistently clear throughout the response.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary that is appropriate for the task. Phrases like 'undergone major repairs', 'digital archives', and 'preserve important memories' are used accurately. While the vocabulary is sufficient and precise, it remains somewhat functional. To achieve a higher band, try to incorporate more sophisticated collocations or less common lexical items that show a deeper command of the language, such as 'genealogical significance' or 'architectural integrity', which would elevate the tone of your writing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0

The grammar is generally accurate, and you use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures effectively. Most of your sentences are error-free, and the punctuation is used correctly. There is a good variety of structures, such as the use of 'By investigating...' and 'whether it has undergone...'. While the control is strong, the range of complex structures could be slightly broader to demonstrate more flexibility. Overall, the writing is clear, and there are no errors that impede communication.
