Student answer (Band 7.0)
Nowadays, it has become increasingly common for people to be interested in finding out about the history of the houses or buildings where they live. There are several reasons behind this growing interest, and people can use different methods to obtain historical information about their properties.
One major reason is that people are curious to know about the previous owners and the age of their homes. In particular, individuals living in older buildings may want to discover who lived there before them and whether any important events took place there. Furthermore, understanding the history of a property can help people identify its original design and previous changes. For example, a person living in an old house may discover that it was built more than a hundred years ago and was previously owned by a well-known local family. Such information can make the property more interesting and meaningful to its current owner.
There are several ways in which people can research the history of their homes. One effective method is to search local government records, where information about previous owners, construction dates, and property changes may be available. People can also use online archives to find old photographs, maps, and documents related to their area. Additionally, speaking with elderly neighbours or previous owners can provide useful information that may not be available online. Local libraries and museums can also be valuable sources of historical information.
In conclusion, people are increasingly interested in the history of their homes mainly because of curiosity and a desire to understand the background of their properties. They can obtain this information through government records, online archives, local libraries, and conversations with previous owners or residents.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The response addresses both parts of the prompt clearly. The reasons for the interest in building history are well-explained, focusing on curiosity and the desire to understand property background. The methods for research are also clearly outlined, including government records, online archives, and oral history. The ideas are relevant and logically extended, though they could benefit from more specific, real-world examples beyond the hypothetical 'well-known local family' to reach the highest band. Overall, the response is well-focused and meets all requirements of the task.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Each paragraph has a central theme, and the progression of ideas is smooth. Cohesive devices such as 'One major reason', 'Furthermore', and 'In addition' are used effectively to link sentences and paragraphs. The paragraphing is appropriate, and the referencing is clear throughout the text. The flow of information is natural and easy to follow, demonstrating a good command of organizational structure.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
The vocabulary is accurate and appropriate for the topic. You use a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your ideas with precision, such as 'historical information', 'online archives', and 'construction dates'. While the range is adequate and allows for flexibility, it lacks the more sophisticated or idiomatic collocations that would characterize a higher band. There are no significant errors in word choice or spelling, and the language used is consistently natural and clear throughout the response.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0
The essay demonstrates a good control of grammatical structures. You use a mix of simple and complex sentences effectively, such as 'One effective method is to search local government records, where information... may be available.' The majority of your sentences are error-free, and punctuation is used correctly. While the grammatical range is solid, incorporating a wider variety of complex structures, such as inversion or more advanced conditional forms, would further enhance the quality of your writing. The current level of accuracy is high, with no errors that impede communication.
