Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0

The response addresses both parts of the prompt: reasons for interest in building history and methods of research. However, the development is limited. The reasons provided—curiosity about previous owners and financial investment potential—are relevant but explained in a simplistic, repetitive manner. The section on research methods is underdeveloped, focusing only on interviewing previous owners, which ignores more formal methods like public records or archives. The ideas are presented but lack the depth and supporting detail required for a higher band. The position is clear, but the overall response remains superficial throughout.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0

The essay is organized into paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the structure. However, the use of cohesive devices is mechanical and sometimes inaccurate, such as the repetitive use of 'Firstly', 'Secondly', and 'Thirdly'. Referencing is often unclear; for example, the pronoun 'they' is used inconsistently, making it difficult to determine whether the writer is referring to the house owners, the buyers, or the buildings themselves. The progression of ideas is somewhat disjointed, and the transition between sentences often feels forced rather than natural.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The vocabulary is limited and repetitive, relying on basic terms like 'house', 'people', and 'money'. There are several instances of word-choice errors and non-standard collocations, such as 'penny problem' instead of 'financial difficulties' and 'make themselves satisfy' instead of 'gain satisfaction'. Spelling errors are frequent, including 'intrested', 'mony', 'lnow', 'openion', and 'apportunity'. The range of vocabulary is insufficient to express complex ideas, and the errors occasionally impede the reader's understanding of the intended meaning.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The essay relies heavily on simple sentence structures. Attempts at complex sentences are frequent but consistently marred by grammatical errors, particularly in subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'the old owner... are they wealthy', 'the area are crowded'). Punctuation is also problematic, with inconsistent capitalization and misuse of commas. The frequent errors in basic grammar, such as verb tense and pluralization, are noticeable throughout the text and cause difficulty for the reader. There is a lack of control over complex structures, limiting the score in this criterion.
