Student answer (Band 6.0)

I Nowadays, more and more people are interested in finding out about the history of the house or building where they live. There are several reasons for this interest, and people can use different methods to research the history of their homes.

One main reason is that people want to know more about their local area and their own background. An old house may have an interesting story about the people who lived there in the past. For example, a family may discover that their house was built many years ago or was owned by an important person. This can make people feel more connected to their home and community. Another reason is that people are sometimes interested in the value and condition of their property. Knowing the history of a building can help them understand why it has a particular design or structure.

There are several ways to research the history of a house. First, people can ask older neighbours or previous owners because they may have useful information about the building. They can also visit local libraries and government offices to find old documents, maps and records. In addition, the internet is a very useful source. People can search websites, old photographs and online newspapers to find information about their property and the surrounding area.

In conclusion, people are becoming more interested in the history of their homes because they want to understand their property and feel connected to the past. They can research this by talking to local people, checking official records and using information available online.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses both parts of the prompt: the reasons for the interest in building history and the methods for researching it. The ideas are relevant and clearly presented. However, the development is somewhat basic. For instance, while you mention that knowing history helps people feel connected to their community, this point could be expanded with more depth or a specific example of how this impacts social cohesion. Similarly, the research methods are listed clearly but lack a bit of detail regarding the process. To reach a higher band, ensure that each point is fully extended with more nuanced explanation or illustrative examples.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Each paragraph has a central theme, and the progression of ideas is easy to follow. You use cohesive devices such as 'One main reason', 'Another reason', and 'In addition' effectively to link your points. The paragraphing is appropriate and contributes to the overall clarity of the response. To improve, you could vary your linking words slightly more to avoid a somewhat mechanical feel, but the current structure is coherent and serves the purpose of the task well.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task. Words like 'property', 'structure', and 'connected' are used accurately. However, the vocabulary is generally quite standard and lacks the 'less common' or 'precise' lexical items that would elevate the score to a higher band. For example, instead of 'useful information', you could use 'invaluable insights' or 'historical records'. There are no significant spelling or word-choice errors that impede communication, but expanding your repertoire of topic-specific collocations would be beneficial for future tasks.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay displays a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures. Most of your sentences are grammatically accurate, and punctuation is used correctly throughout. You show control over basic grammar, such as subject-verb agreement and tense consistency. To achieve a higher band, you should aim to incorporate a wider variety of complex structures, such as conditional sentences or more sophisticated relative clauses. While the current grammar is clear and error-free, it is somewhat repetitive in its construction, which limits the range demonstrated.
