Student answer (Band 6.0)

It is true that in some countries, people seem interested in finding out about the history of the house or building they live in. People often buy a house, live there for years and then suddenly feel the urge to know about its history.

The main reasons can be as follows. People might start exploring places like the attic and find goods which were owned by the previous owners. This instills them with an immediate urge to dig deeper into the history of the house. People might find something unpleasant that makes them question their home. For example, in horror movies people living in the house are probably not the first owners and they find something scary which might haunt them. I think this is one reason why people are interested to know about the history of their house. People watch horror movies and feel anxious about their own house. Sometimes such situations excite them to explore the history of their house.

People can research on this by contacting the previous owners and getting relevant information from them. The house they live in might be an ancient one. They can check for hidden rooms or trap doors and look for hidden information in closed spaces like the attic. As you see in thriller movies, the most crucial informations are found from such places. People can also go online and look up their place on the internet hoping they might find something interesting and useful.

Many people across the globe are beginning to develop the curiosity to know about the history of their house. This has become a worldwide trend and many people share their thoughts and findings through social media. This encourages others to look into the history of their house.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses both parts of the prompt: reasons for the interest in house history and methods for research. However, the development is somewhat superficial. Relying heavily on horror and thriller movie tropes as primary examples is not entirely appropriate for an academic task, as it lacks real-world depth or sociological insight. While the ideas are relevant, they are not fully extended. For instance, the mention of social media is a good point, but it is introduced very late and not explored in detail. To improve, focus on more realistic motivations, such as architectural preservation, genealogy, or property value, and provide more concrete, grounded examples.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is organized into clear paragraphs, each with a central topic. There is a logical progression from the introduction to the reasons, then to the research methods, and finally a concluding observation. However, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat mechanical and repetitive. Phrases like 'People might' and 'People can' are used frequently to start sentences, which limits the flow. The transition between the idea of 'horror movies' and 'researching history' is a bit abrupt. Using a wider variety of linking words and referencing techniques would help the ideas connect more naturally and improve the overall flow of the argument.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task but lacks the precision and sophistication required for a higher band. The student uses basic terms like 'goods', 'unpleasant', and 'scary'. There are also some minor collocation issues, such as 'research on this' (research into this) and 'crucial informations' (information is an uncountable noun). To reach a higher band, you should aim to incorporate more topic-specific vocabulary related to history, architecture, or investigation, and ensure that word forms are used correctly. Avoid relying on simple, repetitive adjectives.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical errors. For example, the pluralization of 'information' is incorrect, and there are minor issues with article usage and preposition choice. The sentence structures are functional but lack the variety and complexity that would demonstrate a higher level of control. To improve, focus on reducing small errors in subject-verb agreement and noun countability, and try to incorporate more varied complex sentence structures, such as conditional or relative clauses, to enhance the grammatical range.
