Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
The response addresses both parts of the prompt: reasons for the interest in house history and methods for research. However, the development of these ideas is inconsistent. The explanation regarding 'legal or illegal' property status is somewhat confusing and lacks clarity. The second body paragraph provides relevant methods like estate agents and council records, but the conclusion is abrupt and incomplete, ending mid-sentence ('people convenient'). While the main ideas are relevant, the lack of depth and the unfinished nature of the response prevent it from reaching a higher band. The position is generally clear, but the supporting arguments require more logical expansion to fully satisfy the task requirements.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5
The essay is organised into paragraphs, but the flow of ideas is frequently interrupted by awkward phrasing and incomplete thoughts. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'To commence with' and 'Furthermore', but they are sometimes used mechanically or incorrectly. Referencing is occasionally unclear, such as in the sentence 'Every member who purchases any property makes them registered', where the pronoun 'them' does not clearly refer to the property. The final paragraph is particularly problematic as it is an incomplete sentence, which significantly disrupts the overall coherence of the piece.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task but lacks precision and variety. There are several instances of awkward collocations and word choice errors, such as 'finding history about the people's old house' instead of 'researching the history of their homes' and 'previous ownerships for their land'. The phrase 'boost their vision' is also unclear in this context. While the student attempts to use topic-specific vocabulary like 'estate agents' and 'district council office', the overall range is limited, and the errors occasionally make the intended meaning slightly difficult to grasp.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The essay displays a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors throughout. Common issues include subject-verb agreement ('who deals with property ownership' should be 'deal'), incorrect preposition usage ('investigate about'), and awkward sentence construction ('this will make individual to explore'). Punctuation is also inconsistent, and the final sentence is a fragment, which is a significant error. While the meaning is usually understandable, the high frequency of errors in basic grammar and sentence structure limits the score in this criterion.
