Student answer (Band 5.5)

Recent news articles have shown how in various countries, a lot of people are curious to identify the past about their house or the building they are living in. I will be discussing both, the reasons and how can people research about it.

When we think about an old building a thought about how this building is so strong, even after facing so many climatic changes. A lot of people want to know the history of the past about the house building, when that house or property belongs to their ancestors and the reason for this is family heirloom. Another reason can be the authenticity of the materials used while making that building or a house.

I believe that there can be a way to research and know about your house or building. One of the ways can be to contact the contractor or the architect of that building of the house. In case if the building or the house is really old, and there might be a possibility that the contractor or the Architect might not be present at the same location, then you can hire really reputed Architect so that he or she can help you identify the authenticity of the materials used while making the house.

In conclusion, knowing the past of your house of the building can help you understand if the grounds or the materials used in making that building or house are not of the standard quality, then what steps you need to take further

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The response addresses both parts of the prompt: reasons for interest in building history and methods of research. However, the development of these ideas is limited. The reasons provided—family heritage and material authenticity—are mentioned but not fully explored or supported with specific examples. The research methods suggested are somewhat repetitive and lack depth, focusing primarily on architects and contractors. To improve, you should expand on your points with more detailed explanations or hypothetical scenarios. The conclusion is incomplete, as it trails off without fully summarizing the main points or providing a final thought, which affects the overall task fulfillment.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5

The essay is organized into paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the structure. However, the logical progression within paragraphs is sometimes weak. For example, the second paragraph jumps between ideas about building strength and family heritage without smooth transitions. Cohesive devices are used, but they are often basic or slightly mechanical (e.g., 'One of the ways', 'In conclusion'). The referencing is occasionally unclear, such as the phrase 'the history of the past about the house building', which is redundant and awkward. Improving the use of linking words and ensuring each paragraph has a clear, singular focus would enhance the flow.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task but lacks the precision and variety required for a higher band. There is significant repetition of words like 'house', 'building', and 'materials'. Some phrasing is unnatural, such as 'identify the past about their house' or 'the history of the past'. While you attempt to use some topic-specific vocabulary, such as 'authenticity' and 'contractor', the overall range is limited. To achieve a higher score, focus on using more sophisticated synonyms and collocations, and avoid repeating the same nouns throughout the essay.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede clarity. For instance, 'a thought about how this building is so strong' is a sentence fragment. There are also issues with article usage and prepositional phrases, such as 'research about it' (research it) and 'the history of the past'. While the meaning is generally understandable, the frequency of these errors prevents the writing from reaching a higher band. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and refining complex sentence construction will help improve your accuracy.
