Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response addresses both parts of the prompt, identifying reasons and research methods. However, the development is somewhat superficial. The reasons provided—family stories and historical significance—are relevant but lack depth. The research methods suggested are limited to physical digging or talking to elders, missing more formal avenues like public records, archives, or online databases. The example provided about the 'crest' is a bit anecdotal and does not fully illustrate the typical ways people research their homes. To improve, you should expand on the 'how' by discussing professional resources, such as land registries or historical societies, to provide a more comprehensive answer.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The essay is organized into paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the structure. However, the flow between ideas is sometimes mechanical. For instance, the transition between the reasons for interest and the research methods is abrupt. The use of cohesive devices is limited; you rely heavily on simple connectors like 'also' and 'in conclusion'. To reach a higher band, you should use a wider variety of linking words and ensure that each paragraph has a clear topic sentence that connects back to the main prompt. The logical progression within paragraphs could also be strengthened by better signposting.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task but lacks the precision and range required for higher bands. You use some repetitive phrasing, such as 'history of the house or building' and 'finding some'. There are also minor collocation issues, such as 'gained an interest finding about' (should be 'gained an interest in finding out about') and 'taken in possession' (should be 'taken into possession'). While the meaning is clear, the range of vocabulary is limited to common, everyday words. Incorporating more academic or topic-specific terminology would enhance your score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The essay contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally distract the reader. Examples include 'a lot of stories keep popping on news channel' (should be 'news channels'), 'pervious owners' (should be 'previous'), and 'a thousand years old' (should be 'a thousand years old' or 'dating back a thousand years'). Subject-verb agreement and article usage are inconsistent throughout the text. While these errors do not completely impede communication, they are frequent enough to prevent a higher score. Focusing on proofreading for basic tense and pluralization errors would be beneficial.
