Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
The response addresses both parts of the prompt: the reasons for the interest in building history and the methods for researching it. However, the development of these ideas is somewhat superficial. For example, the explanation of why people want to feel 'rooted' is a good start but lacks specific examples or deeper analysis. The mention of a survey by the 'University of East Anglia's graduates' feels like a forced attempt to add evidence, which lacks credibility. To reach a higher band, you should expand on your points with more detailed explanations and concrete, realistic examples rather than relying on vague generalizations.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5
The essay is organized into clear paragraphs, and there is a logical progression from the introduction to the body paragraphs and the conclusion. You use some cohesive devices such as 'On the one hand,' 'Moreover,' and 'First and foremost.' However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical or forced. Additionally, the referencing is occasionally unclear, such as in the sentence 'the history always appealed humans toward itself,' which is awkward and disrupts the flow. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring that sentences connect more naturally would enhance the overall coherence.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, but it lacks the precision and flexibility required for higher bands. There are several instances of awkward phrasing and incorrect word choices, such as 'appealed humans toward itself' and 'they keen to technology.' Some terms are used repetitively, such as 'knowledge' and 'buildings.' To improve, focus on using more sophisticated collocations and idiomatic expressions. For instance, instead of saying 'get knowledge,' you could use 'acquire historical insights' or 'conduct archival research.' Expanding your range of academic vocabulary will help you achieve a higher score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The essay contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede clarity. Examples include 'which there ancestors build' (should be 'which their ancestors built'), 'who alive' (missing verb 'are'), and 'methods which used' (passive voice error: 'which were used'). Punctuation is also inconsistent, particularly with the use of semicolons and commas. While the meaning is generally understandable, the frequency of these errors prevents the essay from reaching a higher band. Focus on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of relative clauses.
